The manual has 5 parts, including Rolled Steel Structural Shapes, which includes regular and special series shapes, as well as general information on bars and plates and rolling mill practice. Structural engineers will find useful information regarding permissible tolerances and variations for rolled steel structural shapes, permissible variations in length, width, flatness, and camber for plates over two inches thick, and more. Other topics discussed include beam bearing plates, column base plates, and bolt heads and nuts, with standard dimensions and weight information provided. The AISC Structural Steel Construction Manual 5th edition, copyrighted and published by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) in 1947, underwent substantial revisions in 1946 to conform to industry lists following the end of WWII. Part II includes estimating and detailing information such as detailing practice and standard beam connections, while Part III covers allowable loads by AISC. Miscellaneous data for estimating and designing covers the weight and area of bars and plates, economy of shapes, and properties of plate and angle girders.
The book is clean and complete. The binding is square and both cover and page bindings are tight. The dark blue pebble grain cover cloth with gold front cover and gold spine edge print is unfaded. Cover wear consists of slight inward curling of the front cover edges and there is crease near the center of the front cover extending from the AISC symbol to the bottom edge of the book. This crease is noticeable on the outside of the front cover more than on the inside and does not represent a break in the cover board. If handled with care it this condition should not worsen. There is a previous owners name written in ink on the inside of the front cover. There are no other markings in the book. There are several glued on section tabs on the outer edges of the pages marking the sections for a preior owner. There are no torn, loose, missing, creased or marked pages of the text. The book is well worn and may make a useful reference book but will not be suitable for display.
