  393. RALPH B. CARTER 3" BALL VALVE DIAPHRAGM TRASH PUMP. In 1920 Ralph B. Carter contracted to lay water mains in New York City. He had such poor service with Dewatering Pumps that he designed the pump in this bid, had the wood patterns made for castings, contracted the machining and assembled the pumps in the sub-basement of his Store-Office at 152 Chambers St. in New York. The engines (Fairbanks Morse 1-1/2 HP, Model Z) and trucks were purchased from Fairbanks Morse. Carter placed his own brass tag on the back of the engine water hopper. A total of six pumps were assembled in the Store-Office sub-basement and put to work by Carter's employees. Some time later AT&T, after observing the pump in operation, contacted Carter and wanted to order a carload of the pumps for all of their affiliates. The order was accepted by Carter who subsequently went into the pump manufacturing business. The serial number on the FM engine is 471994. It was manufactured in 1920. The pump in this bid is believed to be one of the original six. It was restored in 1975/1976, test run after restoration and placed in storage. The restoration was recently upgraded with new engine intake and exhaust valves. The pump was started and run again prior to placing this ad. This equipment runs satisfactorily and can be put to work or displayed. It is furnished complete with starting crank, FM engine instruction manual, and AB-33 Bosch magneto instruction manual. The buyer is responsible for shipping. Best option is to pick up in Chester, Virginia, United States. This equipment is being sold with a low minimum bid and no reserve. Quality equipment MADE IN U. S. A..
