It is freely soluble in water. It contains five molecules of water as water crystallization. At 48 degrees C, the sodium thiosulfate melts; at 215 degrees C, it loses all its five molecules of water; and above 220 degrees C, it is converted into sodium tetrasulfide. It is also used to determine the strength of many oxidizing agents, such potassium dichromate, potassium permanganate and copper sulfate, which, on reacting with excess KI (potassium iodide) solution, liberate iodine. The liberated iodine is titrated with a standard solution of sodium thiosulfate. Uses for Sodium Thiosulphate: Dechlorinating Water (aquariums, koi ponds, etc..) Make a concentrate by adding just 4 Oz of the Sodium Thiosulfate to 1 gallon of water.
