The Orpington is a heavy breed (7 to 10 pounds) of chicken named after Orpington England, which was made famous in part by the breed. Their large size and soft appearance together with their rich color and gentle contours make them very attractive, and as such its popularity has grown as a show bird rather than a utility breed. The breed is cold-hardy due to their build, but the fluff of their feathers allows rain to penetrate, so they must be provided adequate dry shelter. They are good layers of medium to large, light brown eggs. Our Black/Split to Lavender Orpington flock consists of very large, friendly Lavender Roosters covering Black, Black/Split to Lavender and Lavender Hens.  Our variety is a cross of American and English.  Chicks from this flock can hatch as Black or Lavender.  So far this year, only Black chicks have hatched.  These black chicks will be 'split black' meaning that they will carry the lavender gene. Use these chicks to help improve the color and feather of your current lavender flock by breeding with Lavenders.  Please be aware that there are only 2 laying lavender hens in this flock of 12 hens.   Pros: Very docile and sweet natured Consistent egg layer through the winter Does well in colder climates   Cons: Slow to mature and lay Hens tend to go broody after their first year Larger breeds require more feed   Eggs are wrapped individually and shipped 'fat end up' to help keep the air cell stable during transit.  Eggs are shipped Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and will be processed in the order they were received.    Specific ship date requests should be placed in your order notes and will be honored as the hens allow.  If there is a day that you DO NOT want your eggs shipped, please include that information in the order notes as well. We request all hatching eggs be picked up at your local post office to reduce shipping trauma.  PLEASE supply a phone number if you want your eggs addressed in this manner.  All eggs are shipped USPS Priority Mail and typically arrive 2 to 3 days after shipping.  Please understand that even though we might address a box "HOLD AT POST OFFICE", it might still be delivered to your door.  This is out of our control. We ship the freshest eggs possible and package in a manner that will limit the chance of breakage or damage.  We do not guarantee hatch rates due to factors that are out of our control such as rough handling, incubator error, etc.
