Sixty Years With Men and Machines: The Autobiography of Fred H. Colvin, Master Machinist, by Fred H. Colvin, originally published by McGraw-Hill Book Co, New York, NY, 1947. Reprinted by Lindsay Publications, Bradley, IL, 1988. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 softcover, 297 pages, ISBN 0-917914-86-4. Please note this book is new, not used. It is a reprint, not an original. This is old "new" stock which I have had for over 10 years. It was just today that I found that I had two copies of this that I had set aside in my private library when Lindsay still had these in stock. So it is almost like new, with very little scuffing or edgewear to the covers. Fred H. Colvin began as an apprentice machinist in 1883, and ended as senior editor of American Machinist Magazine, the first publication of what became McGraw-Hill Corp. Sixty Years With Men and Machines is filled with personal memories of famous men and incredible machines and how they created the world we know today, from the Columbian Exposition of 1893 to the jet fighters of World War II. Charles and Frank Duryea, Henry Ford, Louis Renault, Glenn Curtiss, Gottlieb Daimler, Samuel Langley, and Orville and Wilbur Wright, are just some of the incredible cast of characters that fill this wonderful book. And among the fascinating photos Colvin includes is one with this caption: “The lathe which turned engine parts for Ericsson’s Civil War ironclad, Monitor, launched January 30, 1862.” This is like sitting on your grandfather's knee and having him give you a detailed account of machines and his love affair with them. There's also photographs of: the first national automobile show, in the old Madison Square Garden of New York City, November 1900; Charles Duryea in 1946 driving one of his early runabouts; Louis Renault driving his first car, about 1898; the first Wright aeroplane motor; and a number of founders of important machine tool making companies, including James Hartness, L.E. Starrett, and Ambrose Sweeney. From the beginning of Chapter One: My original purpose some years ago when I first began collecting notes for the present book was to write a detailed, definitive history of machine tools and their relation to the development of modern mass production in industry. In the course of compiling it, the material seems to have got all mixed up with personal anecdotes, sketches of the many interesting people I have met, and a kind of running biography of myself. The definitive history of machine tools, therefore, remains to be written; but the present work, because of what I believe is a more popular approach, should at least bring the high lights of that history to a wider audience than that provided in the ordinary trade journals. I can only hope that I am right.
