USN-CBON 6108/BS-213 Alpha-Beta-Gamma Sensitivity - The Perfect Mini-Probe Tube    The original USN-CBON-6108/BS-213 GM tubes were manufactured in the mid- 1950’s specifically for the U.S. Military (USN = U.S. Navy.) They were  built according to extremely tight Mil tolerances by two well known companies, Victoreen and Anton (later renamed EON). Each tube was handled as a unique creation, with individualized serial numbers (which were usually hand-inscribed both on the tube and on its box). To verify functions met requirements, every single tube produced in this series was fully hand-inspected and then tested for quality and function under the strictest of conditions. (The serial number was only assigned when the tube passed all Mil-spec criteria for field usage.  In the Military, equipment failure is never an option when lives are at stake.) They were made only to be used in highly specialized radiation measuring equipment for the Atomic Bomb testing programs in the Pacific. These came to us directly from Military storage. Only a few thousand of these powerful super-high grade tubes are believed to have ever been produced, so there are not that many available. Even our own stocks are very limited.    SPECIFICATIONS: 1. Gas Filling: Ne + Halogen 2. Cathode Material: Stainless Steel 3. Maximum Length: 42mm  (1-5/8”) 4. Maximum Diameter: 8.7mm (11/32”) 5. Connector: Grid Cap Clip (6.25mm (1/4") for anode, 11/32" for cathode) 6. Operating Temp.: -40 to +75 C. 7. Mica Window Diameter: 6.25mm (1/4") 8. Recommended Anode Resistor:  1 Megohm 9. Recommended Operating Voltage: 600vdc 10. Background CPM (counts per minute):  1-3 (in the Palm Springs, CA desert area) 11. Tube Capacitance (pf):  3 12: Weight (grams): 5.2   Because these have thin mica windows, they're super-sensitive to ALPHA as well as BETA, GAMMA, and X-RAY radiation. They were fitted into pencil-like hand-held probes, to be used with portable Geiger Counters for testing mostly surface contamination on foliage and soil at ground level following fallout from nuclear tests.     There is a unique Military designation, "USN," indicating that they were ordered by the U.S. Navy to be specifically used in such places as “Bikini Atoll” and other sites in the Marshall Islands during the nuclear testing dozen there in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. They were part of the American Nuclear Testing Program that was highly classified at the time. Now that program is over for over 50 years. These are new GM tubes, built in the 1950's and 1960's to last seemingly forever.  The design is still used; you can find almost identical GM tubes currently being sold by one prominent American GM tube manufacturer with a price tag of upwards of $350 each. For more info, there are plenty of YouTube videos, plug many internet blogs that deal specifically with the 6108 GM tubes. (Just Google "6108 Geiger Tube".)  The new 6108 being offered is still in its original box. It has been re-tested and is 100% guaranteed.  As an extra feature, we're including FREE two pure copper 1/4" clips for mounting the tube in a circuit (not shown, but still included).  Current market price for similar GM tubes made to the 6108's specifications are averaging well below wholesale at over $75 each. Supplies are definitely limited, with stocks expected to sell out well before Christmas.                                                                                                                                     ------------------------------- If you have any questions, please let us know and we'll do our best to answer them.
