Its main purpose is to hold the semen straw and keep it in place during the A.I. procedure. Additionally, the sheath keeps the A.I. gun clean. The straw is centered and held in place using two methods - either with the inner tip of the sheath or by sliding an insert within the barrel of the sheath.
