Research has confirmed that the airplane’s handy tray table is a “petri dish” for all kinds of health hazards, including the super bug Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) which is often fatal once contracted. In 2007 a University of Arizona researcher Jonathan Sexton tested tray tables from three major airliners and found an alarming 60% of the airlines’ tray tables tested positive for the super bug. Also in 2007 Dr. Charles P. Gerba a professor of environmental Microbiology at the University of Arizona swabbed airplane bathrooms and tray tables on eight flights to see what bugs might be lurking onboard. Four out of six tray tables tested positive for MRSA as well as norovirus, the highly contagious group of viruses that can cause miserable one or two day bout of vomiting, diarrhea and cramping, was found on one tray. Q? What are the three germiest spots on airplane? A. Reported by Harriet Baskas, special for USA Today 3:38pm.EST November 14, 2012 Dr. Charles Gerba identifies the three most germiest spots on airplanes are toilet seats, tray tables and the latches on overhead bins. Q? What other germs have been found on tray tables? A. Microbiologist Karen Deiss of Armstrong Forensic Laboratory in Arlington states she has found on the seat tray, Klebsiella which is a stringy mucus-like bacteria that she swabbed off a tray table. Looking down at the petri dish with a small, wet, mold looking white blob, Deiss said, “It’s really gross looking on the plate.” Gerba as mentioned above found norovirus, the influenza virus and diarrhea on airplane trays, which he says are rarely disinfected. Q? How long can these viruses live on these surfaces? A. According to The Wall Street Journal U.S. Edition on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011, viruses and bacteria can live for hours on some surfaces – some viral particles have been found to be active up to a day in certain places. Tray tables can be contaminated and seat-back pockets, which get stuffed with used tissues, soiled napkins and trash can be particularly skuzzy. Q? How often do airlines clean the plane? A. According to one study in 2007 by Dr. Charles P. Gerba, a professor of Microbiology at the University of Arizona states American Airlines deep Cleans its planes every 30 days on average, washing seat covers and Carpets and scrubbing lavatories, bins and tray tables. Southwest Performs a “light” deep-cleanse twice a week and a heavy cleanse each month. Q? Does the health department have any restrictions for cleaning planes? A. According to Dr. Gerba “there is no policy for cleaning or disinfecting. There are no recommendations by the health department.” IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT US VIA EMAIL! Q?
