This antique 1916 Protectograph Check Writer is in very good, working condition. The enameled black paint is shiny with only age-appropriate marks. All parts are functioning; all labels and instructions still in place. The Protectograph Check Writer was introduced in 1913, and sold until 1930. Originally made and patented by G. W. Todd & Company of Rochester, NY, it was often known as  the "Exactly", "Thoroughbred", and "Double Quick". Todd invented and manufactured devices for printing cash amounts on checks in words. This model, made in America, operates with a handle. Checks roll through the machine by placing the paper on the side platform and turning the handle. The words to be printed are selected by the index pointer, located on top of the device, in units of dollars and cents. The Proectograph Check Writer has a fold down tray to hold the paper while printing. There are rulers to indicate what size paper check is to be printed. There is a fold-up panel on the top, formed to fit the curve of the machine, which includes clear operating instructions. There is a guide and slot also on top of the machine for setting the amount of the check. This model is serial number is 565962. Patent numbers are stamped on the bottom of the machine. It measures 16" by 5" with paper tray folded up; 16" by 10" with paper tray down. It stands about 5" in height, and weighs 12 pounds. It is amazing to me that a something manufactured almost 100 years ago can still work. Now that is true craftsmanship! The Protectograph Check Writer will be a great addition to any collector, or to add a unique piece of office decor. Ships in 1-2 business days from California.
