Merrimac Valley Textile Museum deaccession. Offered for auction is a printing block depicting a textile machine which appears to be marked C G Sargent & Son Graniteville Mass. The plate measures about 7 1/4 inches wide x 2 11/16 inches high. The engraver's and plate maker's names are also seen under the machine and the plate maker's name and a patent date of 1875 are stamped in the end grain of the wood backing block.  On the rear we see a print made by the block. It is soiled as seen in the images. Appears to be copper over a softer base metal applied to a hardwood backing block. A smaller plate depicting a massive machine. This was found with a large lot of Davis and Furber printing blocks and may represent a company whose line was purchased by D&F. Davis & Furber were one of America's premier industrial revolution power house companies manufacturing textile and other machinery for mills in New England and beyond.  An attractive and historic piece representing much hand finishing. Companies invested much money in the manufacture of these plates to ensure an accurate representation of their product which would hopefully generate profitable sales. Thank you for looking and please feel free to ask questions.
