Merrimac Valley Textile Museum deaccession. Offered for auction is a printing block depicting a textile machine manufactured by the Davis & Furber Company of North Andover Massachusetts. In this case the machine is shown in a mill setting with an operator and his boss - a pile of raw wool in the background - finished product in a wood basket in the left foreground - mill windows - a wood newel post etc. An exceptional example. The plate measures about 7 15/16 wide x 4 16/16 inches high. The Davis & Furber name is seen in an oval plate on the machine's side as well as a patent date of 1879 below it. There is a name engraved in the lower left which is probably that of the block maker.  An all wood example demonstrating the block maker's art at its finest. Great overall condition with a slight separation (vertically through the top of the machine) of the individual wood blocks which are glued up to create the larger block. This gave the finished block more dimensional stability than a single piece of wood would have had. Several light scratches as well.  Davis & Furber were one of America's premier industrial revolution power house companies manufacturing textile and other machinery for mills in New England and beyond.  An attractive and historic piece representing much hand finishing. Companies invested much money in the manufacture of these plates to ensure an accurate representation of their product which would hopefully generate profitable sales. Thank you for looking and please feel free to ask questions.
