Around 1889, Elihu Thomson developed a recording watt meter known as a watt-hour meter based on the ironless commutator motor. The Thomson meter could operate on either alternating or direct current. In 1891, Thomson began talks with Edison General Electric Co. and the two companies merged in 1892. Thomson and General Electric patented the direct current meter offered here. This Thomson Watthour Meter Direct Current is in wonderful condition. My father carefully kept this great example of early electrical meters. On one of our trips to visit relatives living in Ludlow, Missouri, the small town was just switching over from the old-fashioned manual telephone switchboard. Up until the 1950s, this town hand an independent phone company that maintained an old manual board, where an operator would pull and plug cords to connect, call, and transfer phone calls. When Ludlow switched over to a newer system, this meter was removed. The meter was produced in the early 1900s. My father stored it well to prevent damage. The original parts are all present as they have been protected by the original glass case, which makes it quite rare to have the glass intact. The glass itself is beautiful and increases the value of this historic piece as the entire meter in encased. According to the brass plate on the glass, this meter is 2 Wire, Type C-6, No. 4017376, 5 Amp. and 211-220 Volts. It measures approximately 16"H by 8"W by 6"D. It weighs about 17 pounds. Whether you are a collector of vintage and antique meters, a student of the history of electrical meters, or someone who wants to add an industrial look to the decor of your office or home ~ this rare Thomson Watthour Meter is for you! I highly recommend buyer pays for professional packaging by UPS or FedEx to protect this rare piece.
