This is an antique 3" diameter embossing roller manufactured by the American Strawboard Co., Chicago.  The handle is 15" long and the overall length is 22".  The handle has been cleaned and the 'patina' buffed off a portion of the disc to make the manufacturers stamp more visible.  Note that the disc has a machined flat spot about 5/16" long.  My guess is that the disc, at 3" in diameter, is designed to make one complete rotation in 11" of travel.  The gap is a gauge used to mark this distance.  Right?  Also, see my other embossing dies currently up for auction.
