API Telescopic Ballbar System Retail Price: $8,250 The Automated Precision Inc. (API) Ballbar System may well be the single best all-around device to evaluate and diagnose CNC machines and robots. Easy operation and automatic error identification combine with a unique parallel spring suspension that renders extremely accurate and frictionless measurement. The design allows extensions up to 1.5 meters in radius for large machines. The Ballbar test shows how two axes work together to move the machine in a circular path. Two axes would make perfect circles in a perfect machine, but the API Ballbar measures any deviation from perfection and displays the data in a polar format. Analysis software automatically identifies the types and sources of errors, which is particularly useful where compound errors are present. Error parameters in the analysis software include backlash, backlash components, servo error, periodic error, scale mismatch and squareness. A companion simulation package allows the user to experiment with multiple variables and to learn how various errors influence the contouring performance of a CNC machining center and determine which error correction will lead to the greatest improvement. Machine and servo vibration You will need any computer that has a serial port and Windows XP or 98 to run the API Ballbar software. The manual will be sent in PDF format. That unit today is $8,250 for just the base model, with none of the accessories included. I didn't use it much but it performed well when we did. We just used a spare $50 Windows XP laptop to control it. We had a custom 0.281" mount created for waterjet calibration (replace the mixing tube with this tool) but you could use it on any collet based CNC machine just as easily. The label on the main controller board says Tesla on it. I cannot say for sure if it actually came out of Tesla Co, the same one that makes electric cars or not but this is a high precision, high end metrology tool.
