The ADT Serial Digital Analyser (SDA) is a portable, battery-powered, hand-held device for monitoring and fault-finding in digital audio interconnection systems. It works with either the international standard professional interface (usually known as AES/EBU) or with the serial consumer interface (usually known as one of SPDIF, IEC 958 Type 2 or EIAJ CP-340). Although there is a degree of international standardisation concerning the interfaces themselves, the precise implementation depends upon the product concerned. In the majority of cases two digital audio devices will communicate satisfactorily over one of the above interfaces, but there is also a significant number of cases in which communication fails owing either to a difference in implementation between the two devices, a difference in interpretation of the data, or an electrical problem. This analyser may be used to display the states of the most troublesome data bits carried over the audio interface, and to indicate other possible causes of non communication. It may also be used to monitor the digital signal audibly (using a built-in speaker or headphones), and to display its waveform (eye pattern) using an external oscilloscope. For cases requiring a 'get you out of trouble' fix, the analyser is also capable of editing and re-transmitting the bits causing the problem in communication, so as to establish a temporary working connection between two devices.
