There have been some specific questions I am going to answer that will address some of the current requirements set out by the FCC and by Federal Wildland Fire Agencies.   1. Do these radios meet the communications requirements for Federal Wildland Firefighting Private Contractors set by the National Interagency Fire Center?   YES. If you are a Private Contractor supplying services to the Forest Service, BLM, BIA, Fish and Wildlife or National Park Services the requirements have changed. In an Official Forest Service Letter dated September 9th, 2013 the Federal Wildland Agencies has stipulated that radios being used for the 2014 Wildland Fire Season must be P25 radio compliant with the NIFC Communications Standards. Meaning that as a Private Contractor providing water handling, crews, engines, tenders, dozers and other operational resources the acceptable Bendix King radios are the GPH and DPH model radios. For an official NIFC list of compliant radios acceptable go to this website address: http://www.nifc.gov/NIICD/docs/approved_radios.pdf   The Federal Fire Agencies want the Private Contractors to use the GPH or DPH model radios when assigned to their incidents. Recently a change occured with the P25 Compliance Policy where the wildland fire agencies ruled that the analog Bendix King GPH5102X and GPH5102X Commander can continue to be used until 2018 due to the economic conditions and the costs involved with purchasing the Bendix King DPH models. Although this radio is a 16-Channel model it can be used in the federal and state fires by cloning the set division frequencies as assigned on the incident from another GPH radio. The Federal government PREFERS the GPH5102X 260-Channel or 400-Channel radios, but will accept the GPH5101A as an operational radio. 2. Will these radio meet State requirements?   YES. Each individual state may have its own requirements for function and brand. California predominately uses Bendix King radios for VHF and UHF operations. California PREFERS that the GPH and DPH radios be used on THEIR incidents. However, if your agency is not involved with State agencies then you can do what you prefer as long as you meet the Narrowband requirement.   3. What are P25 Compliant Radios?   These are multi-band, narrowband VHF radios that the FCC wants put into service to replace older radios that just work on the Wideband spectrum (25 KHz) and have only single groups of 14 or 16 channels. The FCC requirement schedule was that all radios used on federal fires were to meet these requirements by 2013, with some extensions to 2014. By 2014 the Federal Wildland Agencies want the Bendix King GPH and DPH radios to be THEIR PREFFERED choice of BK radio. They also went early on their requirements.   The FCC requires new radios manufactured in 2013 and beyond have to have the narrowband function. New radios manufactured by 2018 have to be digital or can be converted to digital operation. This is the basics of the P25 requirements. The approved radio lists can be found at: http://www.nifc.gov/NIICD/docs/approved_radios.pdf The GPH5101A Radio is a P25, Flex-Mode, Narrowband radio that will operate in the wildland fire environment.   4. Can you use these radios for other Fire Department, Law Enforcement, Rescue or EMS operational uses?   YES. If you are part of a rural fire-police-rescue-ems or other agency that is not adjoining to federal wildlands then the GPH Narrowband radios will fill your VHF-FM needs. Areas where these agencies are using these radios for their own local emergencies and operations that will seldom or never work with other federal agencies these radios can be used for your operations.   5. What is Narrowbanding Mode, and do these radios meet the FCC requirements?   YES. These radios will operate in the Wideband and/or Narrowband function.  These radios operate in VFH-FM (144-174 MHz) and can either be Wideband (operating at 25.0KHz), Narrowband (12.5KHz) or a combination of both. These radios will carry you to into 2018 or until digital operation is permanently mandated, and that will be up to the FCC. Right now Digital Radios run between $2300.00 and as high as $7000.00 each. In this economy few people can afford these type of radios. Right now little more than half of the nation's local governments have met the Narrowband requirements because they simply cannot afford it.   6. Will these radios program the Splinter or Interstitial 7-digit VHF-FM frequencies?   YES. The GPH5101A will operate with the Splinter / Interstitial 7-Digit frequencies. The Federal Wildland fire agencies are changing some of their fire channels to this seventh digit frequencies. Local governments as I understand it are seeing little in the way of changes.   7. How can these radios be programmed?   Programming can be done by hand using a programming plug, cloning cable or by computer programming. Alpha-Numeric radios can have the letters programmed by keypad if needed, but are easier with cloning or computer programming. This specific GPH5101A radio has a Numeric LCD Screen. An Alpha-Numeric Screen can be installed after-market to make it a GPH5102A model if desired.   8. What is the difference between Master and Slave radios?   All GPH and DPH model Bendix King Radios are the Master Models. Master and Slave (or Clone) radios were limited to the EPH model radios.   9. Will this radio program in Command Groups?   NO. The BK GPH-Commander and DPH radios can do that function. This specific radio only holds one single group of 16-channels. The solution is to have a GPH5102X or GPH5102XCMD radio programmed for the Division channels, then clone the GPH5101A radio from the GPH5102X radio.   If you are on the scene of a fire and they have changes in the channels you will need to program the changes by hand using a programming plug or cloning cable.   10.  Can you program in the frequencies I need for my local area?   WITHIN REASON. I don't mind programming the first couple of groups of channels but if you want all 210-channels programmed you should seek out someone who is familiar with these model radios. If a large group of radios is being purchase and you can provide me with verifiable permission to have certain channels programmed in I'll see what I can do. Without a frequency list I will program in Non-Licensed Business band VHF channels requiring no licensing.   If you want programming done I will need the following information for each group:   1. Receive Frequency (i.e. 151.400) 2. Receive Frequency Tone / PL Code if any (i.e. 124.6) 3. Transmit Frequency (i.e. 151.400) 4. Transmit Frequency Tone / PL Code if any (i.e. 124.6) 5. Channel name in no more than 8 characters (IE: White Channel #2 is WHITE 2)   11. Will the Base Camps / Communication Units at major incidents program my GPH radio for me?   YES. But with a 16-Channel GPH5101A you should clone it from another GPH5102 radio if possible. Most resources today have their own cloning cables.   12. Do you offer discounts in multiple radio purchases?   NORMALLY YES. On EPH radios I will help out a large multi-radio purchase with a discount or a 'free' radio. But on GPH radios they are in such high demand that I cannot offer a discount on a single or large group purchase because they are so hard to come by.   13. Do you sell Radio Accessories Separately?   YES AND NO. I have a variety of Bendix King radio accessories available for sale with the purchase of my radios, but I will not sell accessories for others to buy for their existing Bendix King radios or for those who are looking to sell their own radio equipment. My accessories are priced very close to cost and I make little on them because of shipping costs. There are some accessories I will sell directly without a radio purchase but you will need to let me know what you need. I am not a parts house for those looking to sell their own radios.   14. Should I purchase a Rechargeable Battery and Charger for my GPH5101A 16-Channel radio?   If you plan to use the radio all the time or use it like a portable scanner then a rechargeable battery will save you money in the end. If you plan to use the radio occasionally or just for fire/rescue/other operations a few times per month then just use the AA-Battery Packs.   15. Will you accept trade-in radios toward the purchase of a refurbished Bendix King radio?   NOT NORMALLY. I have a large supply of parts radios and do not have the need for more parts radios. I only deal with Bendix King model radios because that is what I have used for the last 25 years. Let me know what you have and we can discuss it.   16. Do you accept trade-in equipment of different materials for a refurbished radio set?   POSSIBLY. Let me know what you have to trade in and depending on time, distance and shipping costs and if I have a need for it I may be able to work out something with you. If it is something I can use for my operations or uses it may be possible for a trade of an equal value. It does not hurt to ask. I am always on the lookout for old lightbars, gumball lights, sirens, unitrols, siren speakers, surplus fire apparatus, old fire equipment, and other things. Tell me what you have, and possibly we may be able to work something out.  No promises though.   17. Can I use the old Bendix King LPH or EPH Wideband radios on federal fires?   NO. The federal agencies have mandated Narrowband operations. Do not get caught on the line with these older radio because they may have you leave the scene if you have them. If you are a private wildland fire contractor these radios will not pass Annual Inspections before Fire Season 2013.   The first generation Bendix King LPH5141 is a Wideband radio that is obsolete, and the older second generation EPH5140 and EPH5990 series radios can be converted to Narrowband, but are not worth the conversion costs. It is cheaper to purchase a refurbished BK EPH5101 or EPH5102 radio than convert what you have.   18. Can the GPH5101A be converted to Digital function?   NO. Digital Bendix King radios such as the DPH5102X start at around $2100.00 commercially. Converting this radio to digital function is possible, but not economically worthwhile.   19. What can the Bendix King GPH5101A radio be used for outside of Fire-Police-EMS operations?   This model radio can be used for other non-emergency functions such as the following:;   1.   Private Land Managers 2.   Search and Rescue Teams 3.   Dive Rescue Operations 4.   Rural Law Enforcement agencies 5.   Private Logging Firms 6.   Private Wildland Firefighting Insurance-Sponsored Contractors 7.   Regular and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Agencies 8.   Construction Businesses 9.   Private Security Agencies 10. Pilot Car Operations 11. Disaster Preparedness Groups 12. Multi-Team Large Events such as Paintball, Hunting, Sporting Community events, Etc. 13. Emergency or Disaster Radio Caches 14. Volunteer Public Safety Operations in Rural Areas 15. Mounted Posse Units 16. Small County Public Works Agencies 17. Reserve Police Communications 18. Spare radios for Emergency / Disaster Caches 19. Towing Companies 20. Private Business Owners 21. Private Communications Uses such as Survival Groups, Boy Scouts, Hunting Groups, Off-Road Racing and Riding, etc.   For non-emergency uses I can program in 14-VHF Channels not requiring licenses for private uses and have done so for private individuals wanting inter-personal communications that is less-than likely to be monitored by anyone. You have more privacy with these than the family style pocket radios or SB radios that anyone can monitor.   20. What are Shipping Costs and Choices?   Shipping is by US Post Office Priority Mail using Priority Small, Medium or Large Flat-Rate Boxes, with insurance and signature required. Very larger orders or equipment will be shipped by Federal Express Ground Delivery. A single radio set will run about $9.00 Priority Mail, a single radio with some other accessories such as extra batteries or a radio chest harness would be about $17.00 Medium-Flat Rate, and multiple radios or accessories would be by Large-Flat Rate of $20.00. Larger multiple orders will be through Federal Express Ground Delivery.   21. How can Payment be made?   If using Credit Card payment will be through PayPal. If you need another means, just let me know and we can figure something out at (5 3 0) 5 2 0 3 7 2 1 or by engine 37 'at' cncnet . com .   22. Can you do repairs on Bendix King radios?   WITHIN REASON. I can replace parts and rebuild parts of the radio (such as the Push-To-Talk button assembly), replace keypads, speakers, microphones, knobs and cases. If the parts start getting involved then it may be cheaper to replace the radio or do some kind of partial trade-in depending on what we can work out. I am not a radio technician so problems with the internal mother board may be beyond me.   23. Can you provide 'loaner' radios if a radio is sent for repairs?   POSSIBLY. If you are sending me a radio to have minor repairs done I may get it back to you within a week. If it is something more involved such as a sound board or keypad it may be easier to do a cash/trade-in. I cannot do a loaner with GPH radios, but can with EPH radios.   24. Can I use my radio purchase as a Tax Write Off?   YES. If your purchase is being used for a Non-Profit entity such as a Volunteer Fire Department, Dive Team, Search & Rescue Unit, Organized Volunteer Posse or other entity of a similar function. These can also be purchased as part of a career public safety position. Check with your tax preparer to be sure.   25. What is your background with these radios?   I have been a California firefighter, career and volunteer, for almost 30 years. I have been using these radios for the last 25 years on the fire line and in emergencies and have found them to be the most cost-effective and dependable radios made for the fire service and other emergency operations. I learned how to program and repair these radios on my own and with some help over the years and I have been refurbishing, repairing and servicing Bendix King radios for the last decade with my volunteer departments.   I started doing this regularly after a 2003 wildland firefighter death that was partially caused by lack of communications because only the crew leader had a radio and none of the crew did. These are cost-effective radios that can be used for emergency operations until 2018 if the FCC does not postpone change-overs due to the bad economy. I have sold over 400 of these radios over that time period with only a few problem radios that were replaced free-of-charge.   These are cost-effective radios if you are addressing your radio needs regarding the Narrowbanding issue, and are ideal radios for groups operating in the rural areas of the nation that are using VHF-FM for their operating band.   Please let me know if you have any questions through the EBAY Communicator or through other means at engine 37 'at' cnc net . com , or by finding me at (5 3 0) 5 2 0 3 7 2 1 .
