Minimal lubrication is required for the cutting blades. Oiling these blades lightly on a monthly basis will greatly extend the life and performance of the blades. Weekly washing of the water brushes will assure the most effective reactivation of the glue on the tape. On reinforced tape the glues are heavier, and during dispensing some of this glue wipes off on the brushes and runs into the water tank. If not washed out with warm water and mild soap weekly the glue will accumulate and reduce the effectiveness of the moistening system by clogging the water brush bristles. No repair should be attempted by well meaning but inexperienced persons. This could cause additional problems.  We offer full repair services on most tape dispensers, or we will direct you to a knowledgeable source. SUGGESTED PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE The following suggested preventive maintenance applies to all tape machine models in this web site: Weekly Wash water brushes with mild soap; rinse well. Wash water tank with mild soap; rinse well.  Monthly  Clean accumulated glue from blades.  Apply light coating of light machine oil to back of blade (manuals). On 555 and E and R models, add few drops of oil to the blade felt pad. Semi-Annually  Thoroughly clean all accumulated pieces of tape, tape dust and any other foreign material from inside of machine with dry brush or blower. Clean bottom of heaters and pressure plates of accumulated glue. Clean all covers with a damp rag.   Trouble Shooting Instructions for Model TS333 (formerly BP333) Most Common Malfunctions 1. Not Cutting A. Check and clean blades FM2OBXK, replace if dull B. Check for worn or broken spring FM48AX C. Check stationary shear adjustment 2. Not Feeding A. Check yoke spring adjustment FM33AX - Section 6 Page 4 B. Check gear assembly GE79X for missing or flattened teeth C. Check feed handle pawls (missing) K44B D. Check FM2OBX for accumulated grease or tape resins and clean E. Check set screw on feed wheel PW77CX F. Check FM12EL for binding (replace) 3. Jamming A. Check main gear GE79X for flattened or missing teeth. Replace. B. Check FM11X for bending (lower tape plate) C. Check for bent FM15 shaft D. Check FM12EL for binding E. Check for missing water brush PW1O7AK GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS Tape Feed Problems A) When pulling handle, feed wheel not gripping tape securely. Cause, incorrect adjustment of set screw on Cutter Yoke Assembly, FM26XXX. see Cutter Yoke adjustment. Tape Jams A) Shear Blade, FM2OBX, doesn't lift up before tape feed. See Cutter Yoke and Shear adjustment. B) Tape is being pinched by Pressure Plate due to worn moistening brushes. C) Upper Tape Plate, FM12EL, missing or not in correct position. D) Insufficient space between Pivot Rod, FM-15 and Lower Tape Plate, FM11X. Cutting Problems A) Shear Blades have accumulated asphalt or non-asphaltic gum. Clean with suitable solvent. B) Check Stationary Shear, FM21X, for correct lateral adjustment. See lateral shear adjustment. C) Blades dull FM2OBX , FM21X need replacing. D) Check spring assembly, FM33AX replace if needed . Handle Doesn't Move Freely. A) Caused by worn FM49X, Shaft & Pinion Assembly which needs replacing. GE79X, Main Gear Assembly needs replacing. Cutter Yoke and Movable Shear Blade Adjustment This adjustment is made necessary when the lower idler assembly, FM39XX, "backs down" causing the feed wheels to slip on the tape.  Full rolls of tape will enhance the problem at times causing a "skeeting" noise. On the rear end of the Cutter Yoke Assembly, FM26XXX, is a set screw which controls the height of the lower feed wheel and moving shear at the time the feed wheel initially grips the tape. This set screw can be seen by looking through the large hole in the vertical tie plate in the front of the basket section of the machine. To check for the proper adjustment, raise the top cover, pull the handle slightly forward and watch as the feed wheels come together.  The moveable cutter blade should clear the stationary blade by 2/32" at the end of the slant just as the feed wheels touch. If it has been found that the moving blade was too low, turn the set screw counter clockwise several turns and recheck the position. If the moving blade is too high, turn the set screw clockwise until the correct position is reached. After the adjustment has been made, the Cutter Yoke Assembly should be lifted to be sure that after the Feed Wheels start to grip the tape it can be raised still further against increased resistance. Try dispensing tape. If the tape is catching on the corner of the shear and jamming, turning up the left hand corner of the tape or the tape is slipping under the feed wheels, the adjustment was not correctly made.  It is also important to make sure the knurling on the feed wheels is still there.  If the feed wheel is found to be "smooth" replacement is necessary. Tool needed: 1 - LN-23 Hex Screw Driver 3/32 Shear Adjustment This adjustment is made at the factory and it should not be necessary to change it unless difficulty is encountered in cutting tape. Lift the front cover and look directly on the moving and Stationary Shear Blades. When the operating crank is back against its stop the two shear blades should only be a contacting one another on the right side. There should be a gap between the blades at the left side, and the gap should decrease in width until the point contact is reached on the right side. Ordinarily this gap is about 1/32 of an inch on the left side. At no time should the shear blades be parallel. If it becomes necessary to readjust the shear blades proceed as follows: a. Locate the shear adjusting screw on right side of the machine just in back of tank. (This screw has a washer under it.) b. Loosen screw only slightly so it can be slid up or down. c. It is desired to increase the gap slide the adjusting screw upward. To decrease the gap slide the screw downward. d. Retighten screw securely and try dispensing tape. If adjustment is correctly made tape should be cut easily and cleanly. Crank Handle If desired, the crank handle grip can be reversed. Pressure Plate Weights The pressure plate which rests on the top of the brushes has removable weight slugs. The number of slugs can be varied to suit the tape being dispensed. Heavy weight tapes require more weight slugs than lighter tapes. The suggested number of slugs is as follows: 35 lb. kraft tape - 0 to 1 slug 60 lb. kraft tape - 1 to 2 slugs reinforced tape - 2 to 3 slugs The slugs can be added or removed by pushing in or out. If the machine jams there is too much weight on the pressure plate and some should be removed. To Clean Knife Where reinforced tapes are used it will be necessary to clean accumulations of laminate from the cutting blade from time to time. The knife on the Better Pack 333 has been made especially accessible for this purpose. To clean the knife follow these simple steps: a. Remove water bottle and tank assemblies. b. Depress rocker stop rod protruding from right side of machine with right hand and keep in this position until item "c" below has been accomplished. c. Reach inside machine where tank was removed, pull knife assembly down and swing out to cleaning position. d. To clean knife, wipe off with suitable solvent. DO NOT SCRAPE WITH HARD OBJECTS as resulting scratches will cause fast accumulation of asphalt. When asphalt is removed, wipe with lightly oiled cloth. e. Re-insert knife to cutting position by depressing rocker stop rod as in Item "B" above, tip knife up into cutting position and push upward so the knife will come between stationary blade and guide rollers. Release rocker stop rod. f. Try feeding and cutting tape to check if parts are in proper position. g. Re-install tank and water bottle. Spring Tension Adjustment Both operating springs can be seen by turning the Better Pack 333 upside down after first removing the water tank and bottle. a. The handle return spring is the long spring terminating in a hook type clip positioned in one of three holes underneath the water tank platform. The other end is attached to hammer cam on crankshaft. b. The feed wheel tension spring has one end attached to the rocker carrying the shear blade and the opposite end attached to a hook positioned in one of several holes in the tape basket. Care should be taken not to interchange the two springs. The feed wheel tension spring is the longer of the two springs. It is also made from heavier wire. c. Adjustment of handle return spring -to increase tension on handle return for faster handle return or for cutting extremely short lengths, insert hook on spring clip in second or third hole. d. Should it ever become necessary to increase feed wheel tension to compensate for feed wheel wear, unhook spring at basket and move to hole nearer rear of machine. For lighter tension move end of spring nearer front of machine. e. Note that both the above springs act together and that increasing tension on the feed wheel tension spring may make necessary additional adjustment of handle return spring especially if it is desired to cut extremely short lengths of tape.   Why gummed tape? Benefits of gummed tape over plastic tape: Gummed tape creates a natural bond with cartons. The gummed adhesives absorbs dust, etc. and still bonds to the fibers. Gummed tape can also be used to cover old labels and markings to minimize confusing shipping companies. Gummed tape will flex with a carton during shipping and handling. Gummed tape is also the best method to seal a carton that is over stuffed or under packed. When compared with plastic tapes, gummed tape only requires one strip on the top and bottom flaps. Standard plastic tape is only 2" wide and packers will generally use two or more strips on each the top and bottom flaps causing a doubling of the cost of labor, and an increase in overall tape expenditures. Plastic tape is affected by dust, temperature, and time.  Dust particles will cause the adhesive on the tape to become ineffective.  Extreme cold and/or hot temperatures will cause the tape to deteriorate and sometimes fall off the carton.  With time, some PVC tapes will actually dry out and cause the top layer of the tape to separate from the adhesives.   Gummed Tape is Recyclable!!! Interested in conducting your own test?  Try taking a standard type hair dryer.  Aim it at the pressure sensitive tape.  Once the tape is warmed a little, it will peal right off the carton.  If you save the tape, you can even re-use it to reseal the carton! Plastic tape can also be removed from a carton with very little destruction to the carton fibers and in some cases can be used to reseal carton after merchandise is removed.  (A good test is to take a carton sealed with plastic tape and "Pop" the carton flap next to the seal and see if the tape separates from the carton.) 2" and especially the 3" tape guns are heavy.  Wrist injuries are a real possibility with repeated use.  Injuries are also possible with the exposed blade of the tape gun. Another advantage of gummed tape is the overall appearance of the carton when received by your customer.  Cartons sealed with gummed tape look better after shipping.  Plastic tape when overused gives the impression product may be damaged or missing.  Visit your own receiving department and view the packages being received.  Which packages look the best after shipping? Another advantage with gummed tape is the ability to print as it is dispensed.  See the CodeTaper manufactured by Better Packages. Key Benefits Gummed tape over Plastic: Natural bond to cartons with a very long shelf life. Weight of tape gun can cause wrist injuries. Ability to code print on the tape as it is dispensed. Single strip sealing top and bottom saving labor and material. Benefits of Gummed Tape over Staples: Staples are very difficult to use properly. Most operators do not use enough staples to properly seal a carton. Staples require more a full over flap for stapling (higher carton expense). If not used properly staples may damage the products being shipped if the operator allows the staples to dig in. The biggest area of concern lay in the actual opening of the carton by your customer. As most people pry open carton flaps, staples are exposed creating a hazard to your customers arms with scratches and cuts. Key Benefits of Gummed Tape over Staples: No sharp edges from staples Lower carton expense Simple to use Benefits of Gummed tape over Glue: When a carton is sealed with glue, the carton becomes very rigid. When shipping via parcel services, a carton is bounced and dropped a lot during transit. Cartons sealed with glue loose their ability to absorb the shock without incurring damage. Glue is also messy. Cold glues take too long to set up. Hot melt glues subject your packers to injuries caused by handling the hot guns. Key Benefits of Gummed Tape over Glue: Cleaner to use Operators are safer KEEP IN MIND WHO JUST GAVE YOU ALL THAT FREE EXPERT ADVISE WHEN PURCHASING GUMMED TAPE OR GUMMED TAPE DISPENSERS !!
