Intermediate or accessory operations such as cleaning, inspection, precision finishing and unit assembly may also be accomplished automatically in a preplanned production cycle for optimum overall efficiency, minimum labor and at low unit cost.   This application results in the highly efficient operation associated with transfer machines, enhanced by the reliability and flexibility obtainable through the use of proven standard machine tools. This approach becomes particularly significant when product changes require conversion of existing equipment. The basic machines are readily retooled for a diversity of parts. The loading and unloading devices are basically standard with adjustable strokes and time cycles and require only a change of jaws suitable to the new part. Most of the conveying equipment can be realigned and supplemented to handle the product change.   In many cases the accessory equipment can be adapted to the change, or other required equipment can be readily integrated into the process. Or, in the event there is no longer any requirement for such an automatic line, the individual machines can be retooled and applied to a wide variety of other individual requirements. As a result of this flexibility, product changes can be accommodated on a Bullard Trans-Au-Matic Line at great savings in time and expense over other specialized transfer equipment.   One interesting example of the application of the Trans-Au-Matic concept is shown on the attached flow diagram and photos showing the completely automatic machining of an automotive flywheel, which is finish machined on both sides from the rough casting.   Two Bullard Type "L" 8 Spindle Mult-Au-Matics are used. The rough castings are placed on the gravity roller conveyor at a height convenient to the operator, as shown in the sketch to the right marked Load Conveyor. As each casting reaches the end of the Load Conveyor the platform raises to proper height for the loader arm. The casting is gripped by the loader, raised, swung into the 1st chucking MAM, lowered into the chuck jaws and released by the loader. The casting is gripped by the chuck jaws as the loader arm raises and swings away into position to repeat the cycle.   The casting is indexed thru the work stations to accomplish the 1st chucking operations and back to the loading station.   Here the unloading arm swings in, grips the piece and places it on the transfer conveyor as the loader arm places another rough casting in the machine. This sequence, of course, occurs with each index of the machine.   The unloaded part is turned over by an automatic turn-over device and gravity fed around the conveyor loop, which also serves as a bank, to a position in front of the loading station of the 2nd chucking MAM. Here, in a manner similar to the 1st chucking, the part is automatically loaded, cycled thru the machining sequence, and placed on the Unload Conveyor as a finished part. The cutting time for each chucking is 25 sec. Allowing for indexing time this results in a production of 106 finished flywheels per hour at 100% efficiency, with only one operator to service the conveyors.   In this case no accessory or assembly operations are required but they can be included with no loss of production, providing each one can be accomplished within the 34 seconds required cutting plus indexing time. Otherwise the longest single operation time will govern. January 13, 1969   BULLARD TRANS-AU-MATIC PRODUCTION SYSTEM PROCESSING FRONT WHEEL BRAKE ROTER, UNICAST DISC BRAKE AND ASSEMBLY   As shown in the attached flow diagram and tool layouts, two Bullard 8 Spindle Type "L" Mult-Au-Matics and a 2 Spindle Model 8TCA Templa-Turn are used, linked in an automated line with conveyors, orientation and assembly devices and automatic loading and unloading mechanisms. Composite tooling permits the 1st chucking of both individual parts to be machined on the first Mult-Au-Matic, the 2nd chucking on the other. The automatic assembly device bolts the parts together and the unit is finish machined on the Templa-Turn Vertical Chucker. The 1st chucking of each part requires only 13 seconds machining time. Two units are finish machined simultaneously in 23 seconds, or 11-1/2 seconds per unit.               The actual shipping cost (to be determined based on your country) Cheapest shipping method is at buyer's risk via standard mail  or economy airmail (other destinations).
