The "California Bander" is a castration tool that is simple, clean, and cost effective for cattlemen and veterinarians across the nation! Advantages of Delayed Castration Delayed castration allows you to take advantage of the testosterone that naturally helps young bulls grow faster! Research shows that if you leave bull calves intact they will typically gain 15% faster and will also convert feed 20% more efficiently than steer calves. The Banding process is less stressful especially when used on more mature animals The California Bander is a simple easy way to castrate. The bands come pre-assembled and easy to use (Fig 1) Begin by slipping the left hand in the tool. (Fig 2) with the right hand, place the clip of the band into the slot of the tool. (Fig 3) Hold the free end of the band between the 1st and 2nd fingers of the left hand. (Fig 4) Doing so will help the clip stay steady while you stretch the Band. Grasp the scrotal sac and hold the tool firmly against it. (Tip: roll up a towel to simulate a scrotal sack. Practice a few times to get a feel for the tool and the bands) With your right hand, reach around the scrotal sac and grab the free end of the rubber tubing. Stretch the band a little downward and away from yourself with about 14 to 17 lbs of pull or until there is no more free stretch. (Fig 5) Pull the stretched band around the scrotal sac. (Fig. 6) Lock the band into the clip by pulling the stretched band down the center slot all the way to the bottom. (Fig 7) When the clip is down, pull the band to the right corner of the "T" slot on the clip to lock it. (Tip: Be sure to keep the band fully stretched as you pull it around since you can't tighten it once it is locked in the clip) Release the clip from the tool by slightly tipping it backward. this will leave the band with the clip attached on the scrotal sac. (Fig 8) The rubber tube does not need to come off. If you can fit your finger in between the band and the scrotal sac you do not have the band tight enough. Frequently Asked Questions How big/small an animal can I band? You can apply the band on animals that are very young as long as you can feel that both testes are down when you grasp the scrotal sac. It works best if you can keep at least 1" between the band and the abdominal wall. there is no upper limit on the size of animal you can castrate. How do I know that the band is right enough? We recommend 14 to 17 lbs of pull. To give you an idea of what 14 lbs of pull is, you can clamp a small C clamp onto the end of a band and hang a 14 lb weight on the clamp. After applying the band on the animal, the diameter of the tubing opposite of the clip should be less than 3/16 inch. The large diameter surgical tubing has a lot of free stretch so that it continues to constrict even after the sac starts to dry up. The most important thing to remember is not to let the band relax while you pull it around the sac. How long does it take for the scrotal sac to fall off? The average time for spontaneous detachment is 28 days +/- 9.8 days, or from 18-37 days. Is it important to keep the band stretched as you pull it around? Yes. You can't tighten the band after it is locked into the clip. Do I have to crimp the clips? No you don't. The "T" slot will hold the band without crimping when it is applied correctly. Make sure that the rubber is pulled completely into the corner of the "T" slot. Do you band the animal from the back or the side? We typically use a squeeze on animals over 250 lbs. Once in the squeez you can band the animal from the right side or the back depending on the position of the animal. Do I have to give a tetanus toxoid vaccine? As with all banding operations a tetanus toxic vaccine is recommended. This becomes more important the older the animal is. Banding does not introduce tetanus into the system but does create an anaerobic (oxygen free) environment which is needed for tetanus to grow. The manufacturer's instruction should be followed closely.
