I do performance tests on two (very) different kinds of products, scuba gear and ECG machines. When finished with tests of particular items that I bought for the tests, I often resell them to recover some of the funds for buying other equipment and supplies. The item in this auction is a portable PC-based CardioPerfect ECG/EKG machine/system, including the laptop computer with installed software ready to use. It includes a carrying case and everything needed to start using out of the box. It came from my comparative testing of medical-grade resting 12-lead EKG machines. Several photos, with legends, are shown below, after the main description. The Cardio Perfect system hardware and software was originally designed and built by Cardio Control in the Netherlands. It was subsequently purchased by Welch Allyn. It is, in my opinion, one of the best PC-based ECG systems ever made. It remains very popular and is my own personal favorite PC-based ECG system. This is the one that I use for electrocardiography work and cardiac studies when I'm not testing other machines. I have used Cardio Perfect for many years. It is portable and easy to use, which makes it perfect for taking to different locations including home visits, elderly facilities, in emergency vehicles, or on trips. It takes up little storage space in a physician's, dentist's, veterinarian's, or other user's office, lab, exam rooms, training or classroom, at home, or wherever. In addition to standard medical uses, it also is suitable for non-diagnostic, non-emergency purposes including educational and training demonstrations (the computer can be connected to projectors for classroom use, including for real-time monitoring), teaching labs, sports medicine, exercise science, and for premed, nursing, and other health care related students wanting a low-cost system for learning and practice, as well as potentially for home monitoring, community health programs, and in exercise facilities, etc. It prints on a standard computer printer and, thus, does not need specialized ECG thermal printer paper. It has numerous options and menus. The software that comes with this unit does NOT include interpretation. (I myself prefer and recommend that users generally do not use automated interpretation anyway. Although the CardioPerfect interpretive module, when present [not in this case] is excellent and among the best by ECG industry standards, NO automated ECG interpretation from any brand or model of ECG machine should ever be trusted completely; all automated interpretations can make mistakes, both false positives, stating conditions that are not present, and false negatives, missing conditions that do exist; only a cardiologist or experienced, trained physician qualified to read ECGs can make medical diagnoses. If you yourself are not competent to read ECGs, you need to get help from someone who is. Note that after a person has been diagnosed by a cardiologist for one or a few particular conditions, the cardiologist can show a patient what to look for on their ECG and, thus, use it, for example, for home monitoring. Also, simple heart rate monitoring with an ECG machine can be done by virtually anyone and it is easy to learn how to recognize many arrhythms, such as atrial fibrillation / afib and premature ventricular complexes / PVCs.). One of the many, excellent features of the software is the ability to make direct comparisons on the computer of ECG records from different times, such as from an earlier baseline recording with a more recent recording, to compare any changes in the ECG waveforms (for all 12 leads) that might have occurred. I included an example in the figures. Software version is 1.4.0, Cardio Control Workstation. The actual ECG algorithm computing and basic format of the program for viewing, etc., has remained essentially intact and unchanged up through the most recent versions marketed by WelchAllyn. Most of the changes in recent versions are largely cosmetic or designed to accommodate changes in computer operating systems (see information below). Otherwise, the ECG processing was excellent right from the start and has continued essentially unchanged. Thus, in my opinion, the version offered with this unit is just as good and, actually better in many ways because it is simpler to use than more recent versions. The Cardio Perfect system connects to the computer through an optic cable that is about 16 ft long. It can remain coiled for shorter distances or stretched out full length to achieve good distances between the subject and the computer. The only issues I have had with Cardio Perfect involves installing the software. It is complex, can be tricky and easy to make mistakes when installing and initially setting up, and once something goes wrong with it on a particular computer, it may no longer be correctable on that computer and one has to start all over on a different computer! Recent changes in Windows operating systems and updates of the software have made it even more difficult to install and get running. It was originally designed for use with Windows XP operating systems. The earlier versions of the software itself can still be installed on any version of Windows, including the latest, and don't have any inherent problems per se. However, the original versions were written to use an earlier version of Micro$oft's MSSQL data base server for storing the records. Micro$oft in it's "wisdom" and either as an additional money-making scheme or out of over-security reasons, has seen fit to make its own latest operating systems, Vista, 7, and 8, incompatible with its own earlier versions of MSSQL! As a result, the older versions of the Cardio Control and Cardio Perfect software programs, which have essentially the same, unchanged ECG algorithms, will not install easily (or at all in most cases) on the latest Windows operating systems. Welch Allyn has updated the programs to run with the newer Windows operating systems but, in the course of doing so, made the updates and latest versions of the software extremely expensive. The CardioPerfect hardware version being auctioned here will work with the latest versions of the software, to the best of my knowledge, and a user can update the software if you have the finances to do it. But the easiest solution if an older version of the software is available, such as in this case, is to continue using Windows XP. I personally think Windows XP was one of the best operating systems ever designed. It is still great. And despite the fear mongering from Micro$oft about continuing to use it, it is still entirely safe if it and internet browsers (particularly those other than Internet Explorer, such as Firefox and Google Chrome) are used with good antivirus software, things such as ad blocking, and common-sense, safe computing practices. I have numerous computers, some with Windows 7 and many with Windows XP, and have had no problems with any of my XPs. I still love and use XP often. Cardio Perfect is so great that it is worth the problems of dealing with software installation and setting up (after which, once running, it runs smoothly and easily). Thus, I am including a laptop computer, Dell Latitude D630, one of the best, most rugged, and stable laptops ever built, with Windows XP Pro, with the Cardio Control Workstation software already installed and set up. The computer includes wireless internet access, has one of the best, most widely used and trusted antivirus programs (Avast), Google Chrome (plus Internet Explorer, if you want to use it), and adblock plus installed. The winning bidder can easily add Firefox if you prefer that browser. The laptop can be used for additional computing uses, including with the internet, or one can simply use it as a dedicated ECG machine. It comes with Microsoft Office 2010, Adobe Photoshop Essentials, various media programs, etc. The computer itself is loaded with good stuff in addition to the Cardio Perfect software. I have installed Cardio Perfect software with many units on many computers. I put together a quick-start user's guide for operating the system and am including it here. I also will remain available to help answer questions that the winning bidder might have to help familiarize the user with the program (it has a little learning curve but overall is very user friendly and mostly intuitive). I'm including the software disc in case it needs to be reinstalled or moved to another computer. I have tested many ECG machines over many years and currently have on hand around 20 different brands/models/vintages, both standard stand-alone machines and PC-based in my comparative electrocardiography research lab. If I could only have one PC-based ECG machine, this is the one. I am reluctant to part with this one because they are so good and also very hard to come by. However, I have too many ECG machines, including additional CardioPerfect units, that I'm testing and using for general ECG work, have to move forward, and have to sell ones that I've finished testing in order to recoup some of the funds and purchase other machines and supplies for further testing. I am starting it at a low bid to make sure it sells. This one comes with everything you need, is cleaned and tested, and is ready to take out of the box, plug in, and use, including two packages of adhesive skin electrodes (slightly outdated, 2014-09, but unopened packages, still work just fine, and will work for practice and to get started). You can run many ECGs with what is provided and have plenty of time to order further supplies if needed. (See photos below for details.) Guaranteed to work as described. Free shipping and insurance to the contiguous 48 states. Several photos, as in the eBay listing photos, with additional pictures plus explanations. All are of or from the unit being auctioned, including the screen views of the laptop computer and the printout. What you get: the Cardio Perfect recording unit including a new battery (which lasts for years even with routine use) and built-in lead wires, electrode clips that work on either tab or snap skin electrodes, optic fiber cable (two, so you have one as a backup, and connector, laptop computer with good battery, software disc, quick start user guide, AC adapter/power cable, two new (but slightly outdated, 2014-09) packages of adhesive skin electrodes, and a carrying case that holds everything. It is shown with the computer turned on while running on battery power.   The Cardio Perfect recording unit with attached lead-wires. It is small, portable, and very easy to use, transport, and store. A closer view of the recording unit. View of the back, showing the battery compartment with battery cover in place (and a new battery inside). It uses standard 9-v batteries that are easy to replace when needed. View of the recording unit with lead wires wrapped around it, for storing or traveling. View of the system while running with the real-time monitor, using a standard testing simulator to generate ECG signals. (Note: the simulator is NOT included in the auction.) The simulator is running normal sinus rhythm (NSR) in this example. Closer view, from computer screen view, of the running real-time monitor (moving across the screen at the point where there is a break in the tracing on each of the 12 leads). NSR A different real-time monitor example, from a simulated acute myocardial infarction/heart attack (AMI on the simulator). Computer screen view of a saved recording, including interpretation and comments added by the user (the version of the software supplied in this auction does NOT include automated interpretation). Note the numerous menu options including standard 4x3 and 2x6 views, average waveforms, measurements, or rhythm traces, plus standard measurements. The data base stores an unlimited (for all practical purposes, limited only by the computer's memory capacity) number of subjects and recordings. I have literally thousands of them stored on some of my computers, from repeated testing and many different subjects. This computer currently includes the two records from my simulator testing. This example is from a simulated normal sinus rhythm (NSR). Screen view for better resolution. Example from a simulated acute myocardial infarction (AMI on the simulator) / heart attack. Photo of the computer (first image) followed by the screen view (second image). Example of using the "Averages" option (first view below) and, (second view) from the "Tools" menu, comparison of two different recordings, showing the NSR and AMI records superimposed on each other (AMI in red, superimposed on the NSR in blue). Photo of a printout. Printouts can be printed also to a pdf printer or scanned into pdf (which works good for electronic medical records, EMR, for filing and sending, etc.) For an actual pdf copy of this printout, for better resolution and which can be zoomed in for a magnified view, click here. View of the desktop screen on the laptop computer, showing some of the software it contains. There are also additional programs not shown on the startup screen. For a screen view with better resolution, see the next figure. ******************************************************************************************* FREE SHIPPING and insurance (to the US lower 48 only).
