Offered: Vintage Chandler & Price "Buckeye" 6" x 2 1/4" letterpress composing stick. Patent date for this stick is Nov. 5, 1889.This is a hard to find Nickle plated steel factory offered option. In addition this offering includes a non-conventual stick depth of 2 1/4 inches. The most commonly found depth for composing sticks is two inches. Two additional sizes can also be found in old letterpress equipment catalogs, (2 1/4" as well as 2 1/2" depth sticks). While these two optional depths were also offered in various lengths as well, not many of these optional depth composing sticks seems to have been either purchased or survived to be found in todays composing stick aftermarket. Research on the "Buckeye" composing stick produced the following, article written by Fred Williams Editor & Publisher of TYPE & PRESS. The article "The Lore of the Composing Stick" Spring issue 1987 revealed the following:     Buckeye- Cleveland's Chandler & Price, in addition to their job presses carried a line of printing supplies. William H. Price, Jr. in 1889 patented the Buckeye stick. An ungraduated tool, it had a thump screw in a detachable knee which held it at the required measure. The clamp was based on the Newbury stick. Stick offered has the following stamped into the bed:                                                    THE BUCKEYE                                                   *PAT. NOV. 5, 89                                           CHANDLER & PRICE CO.                                                   CLEVELAND, O.  * This line has a hole drilled through the 89. I had a similar stick that had the date so I included that information.   This is an ideal composing stick for setting business calling cards (oversized and standard). With the extra depth you'll be able to accommodate an extra line or two of type without having to remove already set type from stick. This is an overall nice extra to have in your letterpress toolbox. This composing stick has a previous owners name stamped  into the bed near the foot of the bed. The name stamped is "ANDRUS", this was a common practice to have have the owners initials or personalize it further with their name. Old time compositors held their composing stick near and dear. One comparison with composing sticks to possessions, a compositor would no sooner lend out his composing stick than lend out his toothbrush. This composing stick also has a hole drilled into the bed near the foot, this was also a common alteration found on early composing sticks not provided with a hole to hang the stick on. As already noted this stick has a Nickle plated bed, most of the Nickle plating is evident, there are a few places where the plating is thin or missing. The most noticeable loss of Nickle plating on the stick is on the underside of the stick.     This is one of many unique letterpress composing sticks that will be offered in the near future. I've reduced the size of my letterpress shop and need to find a new home for the accumulated extra sticks that no longer needed.
