Chapman Valve Co. Indian Orchard Mass. 1886 Personal Note Booklet We are listing several books from the very early years of Chatman manufacturing company Boston Massachusetts. These books date back to the early years of the company and some are directly tied to management handwriting, and notes from changes in designs and patterns. These books are estate fresh to the market, and have not been seen by anyone, in almost 100 years. The dates of the books range from 1880 through the mid-1930s. We acquired these books all in one lot, but since they cover different aspects of the business and family will be selling them separately. We also will be listing original black and white 8 x 10 photographs of the company's production pieces, as well as a company photograph book containing 56 pages of inventory at the company sold one first opened up. Chapman valve started out as Chatman manufacturing company and was located at 77 Kilby St., Boston, MA. According to an ornamental Chatman valve clock they started in 1854 and produced fire hydrants with Babbitt metal seats. This location was where they produced the first style of hydrant below, #1703. Very little is known about this style hydrant and the Boston Massachusetts location. In 1874 a new large factory complex was built in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts and the company name was changed to Chatman valve manufacturing company was also here that Chatman introducer list 82 slide gate hydrant had made them famous. Chapman produced many thousands of these hydrants from 1874 to about 1930. All but the very last of these list 82 hydrants have Boston or Boston USA embossed on the upper barrels so it's unclear when the Boston facility was no longer used. This sale is for a real treasure, from the Chatman valve manufacturing company dated August 12, 1886. This is a real gem of a treasure for the collector of these types books. The front inside cover reads from the top down hose gauges August 12, 1886P Dupney, August 12, 1906. The book continues to list different names in different dates up to 1910 which makes me believe this was passed down two different floor managers or engineers our office personnel. As you can see by the pictures and list from one to approximately 283 which was the last entry. The last entry was made out to the U.S. Navy. I'm not sure if these were customers of Chatman valve company or exactly what all these inserts indicate. The book is well used and a rough condition but still intact, almost. The binding is starting to separate from the covers, there is a tear in the front page cover. The numbers are written in ink and pencil, the pages are dirty, some are torn, summer creased, some have edge wear. The size of the booklet is 3.5 x 6.5 ". It's a shame this little book cannot tell a story of all he inserts in it. All this being said you are buying this as is and shown. Make sure you look at all the other items we have from this company as well as original photographs will be listing in the next couple days.
