This is a short-lived perennial most often grown as a biennial and a favourite of cottage gardeners. It is a pan European species with a host of common names including Aegean Wallflower, Goldflack, Violacciocca, Giroflée and Revenelle. It all depends upon where you are from. It has also been introduced and naturalised in many other places, which is a testament to its adaptibilty. It grows to 80 cm tall and will flower in its second spring from seed. The flowers come in several shades with many natural variations from yellow through gold to orange. The flowers are sweetly scented and are an ideal companion plant to many spring flowering bulbs. They are perennial and after flowering, if you wish to keep them for future seasons (or indeed a second flush of flowers in the early autumn), cut them back hard to encourage more growth. Easy from seed, it is an ideal as a cottage garden plant even in poor soil where it will thrive. Hardy in Zones 5 through 9.
