Circular Oblique Illumination COL For Leica Microscope D 360 Degree Oblique Illumination or Circular Oblique Illumination  - is a variation of bright field  microscopy  and is a powerfull tool for improved contrast and enhancing detail. As a focus of research, COL and have been extensively studied and written about by many authors over the years.  The interest in COL stems from a desire to reproduce DIC-like images at a lower cost. It is well known that COL can enhance contrast, and therefore the ability to highlight structures not easily visible under brightfield.  The advantages of COL, are that the enhancement of resolution non directional, with very  little impact on light intensity. This is because the COL setup requires that the condenser and field iris remain fully open for better resolution enhancement. An other  advantage of oblique illumination is directional contrast which results in subjects taking on a 3D appearance. The use of polarized light in combination with COL termed “Polar Annular Lighting” has been studied  with excellent results. Compatible with a APL, CL/PH and CLP/PH condensers -– Leica Microscopes DME, DMLS, DMLB etc, most Leica microscope featuring a condenser equipped with a gate opening for slider insertion.  These are not Leica original units, they are not marked and the material used is Delrin/Lucite for filters and Lucite for holder.
