Lead collimator for Ludlum 2" outside diameter scintillator probes or any 2" O.D. tube scintillator probe. A bit over 2" I.D. to fit over a 2" O.D. so as not to cause damage to the probe and can be affixed using 3-4 strips of electrical tape placed on the probe to keep it in place. The lead is 1/8" thick and the collimator is 3" long, enough to cover up to a 2" long crystal it reduces the background normal radiation by 50% and makes the probe more directional and increases the sensitivity of the window since it doesn't have to overcome the reduced background radiation. In most cases scintillators tend to fill up the lowest decade and sometimes the two lowest decades which are more responsive to slight increases detection with background radiation, in some cases the decade can be lowered to a more responsive scale or the almost overrun scale will drop back to a more responsive lower part of the scale. Very useful for spectrum analyzers, isotope identifiers, and more quickly locating a sources location. Most lab collimators are thicker and sometimes longer but way to heavy to use on a hand held scintillator the 1/8" of lead reduces the background by 50% and doubling the thickness only reduces it another few % making a probe way to heavy for practical use as a hand held scintillator, this one weighs 15 ounces which is just under 1 pound. Will fit Ludlum 44-1, 44-21, 44-98, 44-142, 44-3, 44-2, or any probe with a 2" outside diameter body. Finished with a textured Ludlum beige color epoxy based paint and baked on for protection from exposure to the lead. This is the last of these I will post for sale. ( PHOTOS 3 and 4 show application only of a collimator on a smaller probe with a 1X1" crystal and is NOT INCLUDED. ) I will combine other items whenever possible to keep down the shipping cost.
