Feel free to contact us directly to discuss if this item is appropriate for your application. The NucleoCounter counts mammallian or other large cells using propidium iodide staining. Cells are loaded into the casettes (100 pack retails for $270) and the system counts the fluorescent particles. Dead cells have permeable membranes which allow the propidium iodide to leak in, bind to DNA, and then fluoresce. Propidium iodide is charged so it cannot enter and stain live cells. Total cell count is determined by adding a lethal agent or detergent to the mixture so all cells are stained. Thus, the ratio of counts (no detergent) to  counts (after detergent) multiplied by 100% provides percent viability. It is an elegant system. Does not work for yeast, bacteria, and other small cells. The display provides the results directly, there is no need for a computer connection.
