Artist Statement - Jessica Jhamat - June 2015 My brainstorming began with expanding on the idea of what construction is, what it meant to people and the environment. I decided to take a different approach on that idea of construction by looking into construction in the past. I thought about historical buildings around the world and was intrigued by the Great Pyramids of Egypt since there is so little known about exactly how they were actually constructed. I focused on the construction of the Great Pyramid of Khufu built around 2550 BC because it is the most well-known pyramid. The main focus of the composition was Pharaoh Khufu sitting on top of a pyramid surveying the workers around him. Another main component of the composition was the tools and methods used by workers to construct the pyramids. Considering all the work was manual labour, there were a lot of clever uses of stones, wood and rope to move the large pieces of limestone and granite. There were also several smaller tools used that worked in the same way as modern hammers, chisels and mallets. Images of the work being done on the pyramids are distributed all around the bottom edge of the helmet. At the front of helmet, there is an image of a ship carrying the large pieces of stone used to build the pyramids. This was inspired by an actual image that was carved inside of one of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. The space between the Pharaoh on top and the images around the helmet contains Egyptian hieroglyphics, which translate to sentences describing the tools and scenes below. The placement of the pharaoh on top of the helmet brought the picture all together but also represented the power of the pharaoh. I organized the rest of the composition around the pyramid and the pharaoh. I began by painting the helmet with the colours I chose for the base of the images. All the details were then sketched and painted in with acrylic paint. A black ink pen was used to draw in the hieroglyphics and outline a few other pieces. My composition displays the history of construction dating back to the construction of the Great Pyramids of Egypt in 2550 BC. There are many conspiracies surrounding the idea of how they may have been built which makes it such an interesting and mysterious part of history. I enjoy history and was intrigued by the constructions of the pyramids, which is why I focused on them for this project. The Pyramid of Khufu represents construction from 26th century BC, yet we can relate to it by seeing the similarities between the methods used to build the pyramids and modern day construction. I will be attending Sir Sanford Flemming Collage to take Health Sciences and when I complete this program, I hope to be accepted into Nursing.
