Dekatron DoHickie Kit - Includes all parts & printed circuit board, less dekatron tube. In kit form, get yourself a dekatron do-hickie. What's a do-hickie ? Its the next step beyond a spinner. Instead of watching the dekatron's glow simply spin in circle, this circuit takes advantage of "computer" technology, to generate some more interesting patterns. By the push of the button, you can select between 4 different patterns. One of them responds to ambient sound, that is picked up by a microphone. The audio level is used to mimic and old magic eye tube. The microcontroller, also has the advantage, over the spinner, in that it can control the the glow position at any of the 30 cathodes (or 40 cathodes, of the 3-guide tubes) positions, either guide or main, as opposed to the 10 main cathodes, that the spinner, is limited to. The micontroller, provided with the kit, comes pre-programmed. Its also powered from low voltage. 12VDC or 9VAC are the preferred input voltages. Up to 18VDC acceptable. The circuit only draws ~100mA at 12V. A 5.5mm OD x 2.5mm ID power jack is provided, so wallcubes, with current capacities as low as 200mA (higher better) can be used to power it. You're not 'slaved' to the AC line, so power it from your car lighter jack ! Also, because it has an on board switching supply, its much safer, than many of the 'direct' AC powered circuits seen on the Web. It still generates 480V, so it will still bite you, if you're not careful. Still, much safer than other circuits. Switching power FET is controlled, and regulated directly by the microcontroller. There are many sources available, both on eBay, and elsewhere online. This board is NOT prewired for any dekatron. The builder must jumper J3 to J4 according to the octal base dekatron you intend to use. This is all shown in the instructions at the given link. Dekatrons are remarkable tubes. They were used from 1950 to late 1960's. They are the tube equivalent of decade counter ICs, but performed this function in a unique and elegant way. Read more about dekatrons here: Dekatron Stuff.
