Although each of these elements are used for crime investigations - they are also used for crime prevention. Property marking is highly recommended by police worldwide and marking our valuables with DNA and UV marks is the modern and effective method of deterring thieves and getting our property back. How does a DNA mark help get our property back? We know that our own DNA can be extracted from our body fluids such as blood, sweat and tears! saliva for example has DNA . Dr. Peter Gill of the UK's Forensic Science Service says "Analyzing DNA from fingerprints proves invaluable in any investigation where there is a lack of body fluid, such as blood. This is especially helpful where there is a forced entry/burglary and the perpetrator may have touched a door handle, for example., in the case of a burglary, an item of property will usually yield DNA from the owner and burglar" How does the police know that the DNA fingerprint found on an item of property is yours ... if they don't have a record of it?
