 This is a devise that measures noise & permissible noise exposure.  In 1970 the Occupational Safety & Health Board determined that radiation produced by loud sound was an occupation health hazard & a safety issue.  They determined that workers could handle an 8 hour shift at a noise level of 90 dBA or less.   But workers could only handle 15 minutes out of an 8 hour shift at noise levels of 115 dBA  or more.  It features the clip-on microphones that the workers would wear during their shift & a read out monitor that translate the data into decibels.   It also contains 6 memory cells, the user's manual & instruction booklet.  I never tried it so I don't know if it actually works or not.  This is science, health, safety, politics, business, & industry all rolled into one.  It weighs 1 lb., 10.6 oz. & fits into a (not the original) 9 3/4" x 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" size box.
