Luidia’s Ebeam Edge Smartboard Review eBeam Resources eBeam On-line Tutorials eBeam Quickstart Guide eBeam Specifications eBeam News     Interactive white boards or smartboards have really risen the level of interaction and learning within the classroom. What we really like about Luidia’s Ebeam Edge for Education is that it removes the need to purchase and install expensive and heavy equipment. With the eBeam Edge we can turn any whiteboard or smooth surface into an interactive whiteboard which gives us all the benefits of an interactive smartboard without the costs. The eBeam Edge is small and sleek. The receiver is about the size of a tv remote control but thin like an Apple iPhone while the stylus is just a little bigger than a dry erase marker. When I first opened the eBeam Edge the packaging reminded me of the early days when Palm introduced the first smartphone to the market . Set Up & Install The install and set up is extremely easy. It literally took us less than 10 minutes to set up from start to finish. In the classroom we had a laptop connected to a projector that was pointing at the whiteboard.  Works with both Windows and Mac computers.   Here are the steps to install in a nutshell: First we read through the eBeam Edge Quickstart guide (2 minutes) Installed the battery into the stylus Attached the eBeam Edge receiver to one side of the whiteboard and than plugged in the cord from the receiver to the USB port in our laptop. Installed the eBeam Edge software to our laptop   After installing the software we restarted the laptop and the ebeam Edge software instantly recognized the eBeam Edge receiver and than asked to us to calibrate the system using the stylus to touch the calibration points projected on the screen. The process was very similar to calibrating the old Palm Pilots, but on a much bigger screen. It was that easy. From here we were good to go and explore all the cool features the eBeam Edge for education has to offer. The eBeam Edge allows us to activate any surface up to 9? x 5?. It doesn’t have to be a whiteboard we are projecting our image on to, it could have well been a white wall. Ease of Use We found the eBeam Edge extremely easy to use. Using both the software and stylus is very intuitive and responsive. The stylus has 2 buttons on it, the top button is like a right mouse click, the bottom button gives you access to the Tool Pallette and the tip of the mouse acts like the left click of your mouse. We opened up a powerpoint presentation navigating through our file folder using the stylus. The eBeam Edge tool palette appears at the bottom right of the screen giving you access to all the features of functionality of the software including: navigation, annotations, text and highlighting to name a few of the tools. We found the stylus to be very responsive and the software easy to use. Cool Features 1. Network Sharing - This is a web conferencing feature similar to Webex’s web meeting allowing teachers and students to collaborate anywhere in the world promoting remote teaching.  This network sharing feature comes built in within the software and is a free service. A student that cannot attend school because of a physical ailment can now follow along the class through their computer at home in real time. We have also heard of eBeam Edge being used in multiple classrooms throughout Mexico.  In remote villages where there are not enough teachers to teach the curriculum students can now follow and interact with the class curriculum from a qualified teacher at a central school.   These students can now have the same interactive experience and receive the vital education without having to physically be there. Students Collaborate Using eBeam Edge at a Trade Show 2. Recording – All the handwritten notes, mashups of digital images, annotations on powerpoint presentations are all recorded that can be used to replay a math problem during class or be shared as notes to be reviewed later. 3. Scrapbook Gallery – Being able to provide a use and engaging lesson relies heavily on the content that you can provide. Luidia’s eBeam Edge comes with a feature called their Scrapbook Gallery giving you easy access with a touch of the stylus to a wealth of content that you can use and interact with during your lesson plans. Content is easily accessed from Luidia’s Gallery, Encyclopedia Britannica and Flickr. Within the Scrapbook Gallery there are literally thousands of educational websites that is sortable by age range, subject, and type of site, these resources can be found at http://www.luidia.com/education/web-resources.html. Below is a video explaining how to access and interact with content from Encyclopaedia Britannica within eBeam Edge. 4. Versatile & Portable – In our minds what makes the eBeam Edge such a great value is the versatility and portability that it offers. At 8 inches and 4 ounces the eBeam Edge is easy to carry around and can be used within different classrooms and locations if required. The ability to use our existing whiteboards or even an unused wall makes the eBeam Edge gives us the flexibility to make almost any room into an interactive classroom. Cost & Overall Value At $809.95 the cost of the eBeam Edge is less than half of the total costs of the Smart Board 680 or Promethean ActivBoard without having to compromise on any of the primary features and functionality. If you are looking to supercharge your lesson plans with the interactive capabilities of a smartboard we highly recommend you take a look at Luidia’s eBeam Edge for the best overall value.
