Eurotherm AmpStack AS-1 Heater Power Controller, Model AS1-30A240V/4-20mA, 105C Eurotherm AmpStack As-1 Heater Power Controller, removed in Operational Condition, untested since purchase. This Heater Power Controller is rated for 105 Degrees C. These are from a Diffusion Furnace used in a Semiconductor Fab Clean Room Environment, then stored in a clean, dry warehouse.  They have not been exposed to any harsh environments or elements. Specifications and Details: 30 Amp 120/ 240 VAC output switched by 4-20 mA input. Input can be converted to logic voltage, logic current, or 120VAC. From the Eurotherm manual: "The AmpStack or AS1 is a line of single phase solid state contactors designed for zero crossing firing. The AmpStacks utilize control signals which include a logic voltage signal (5-30VDC), a logic current signal (2-30mA), a logic AC voltage signal (85-135VAC) or a 4-20mA continuous signal. Designed for the highest reliability, each AmpStack features transient voltage and fast acting (I2t) fuse protection. Each unit is designed with an isolated heatsink and to operate at ambient temperatures up to 60 C or 140 F at full rated current and voltage. To assist in troubleshooting, a standard feature of the AmpStack is a fuse failure indication and LED indication of the presence of an input signal. Optionally, a partial load failure circuit complete with relay output is available for annunciating a load failure. The power being switched by the AmpStack and the ground connection are made via terminal lugs located at the top of each unit while the control input and output connections are made via a terminal strip located at the bottom of each unit. A label affixed to the heat sink directly below the bottom terminal strip contains the rating, model number and serial number of each unit." This is a basic high quality, high power solid state relay built by Eurotherm used mainly to control heaters with a fast firing cycle in a PID loop, but it will work just as well with any resistive load such as lighting, etc. Inside the unit:   A module containing a pair of power SCRs is mounted on a large heatsink and includes a well designed snubber circuit to minimize spurious electrical emmisions and turn-on/ turn-off spikes. This is useful because there are no contacts to burn or line noise caused by switching transients such as with a simple contactor. It is designed for rapid on-off cycles for precise heater control. There is a FRN-R or TR-R style time-delay fuse (9/16 x 2 inches) in each one in series with the outputs. The output circuit is separated from the input circuitry by a 4N35 optocoupler surrounded by plenty of blank board space. The input is powered solely by the 4-20 mA input and has an LED that lights when enough power is present to trigger the output. Input switching from the optoisolator to the output stages is via an LM358N dual op amp. There are several other input terminals but they do not connect to anything on the board. They were provided for the extra options that are not included.  It works just as well on 120VAC as it does on 240VAC, with the same voltage drop of 1.3V or less across the output SCRs. The greater the load, the smaller the voltage drop. At full power of 30A, the voltage drop would equal about 30W or less, just enough to justify the large heat sink. 4-20mA operation is the most robust of any communication standard and allows for the rapid cycling of the outputs. If you are unfamiliar with 4-20 mA control lines, here are a few short tutorials that will show you how simple they are to work with: Understanding-4-20-mA-Current_Loops.pdf dms-an20.pdf an104.pdf  It can be converted to any type of input protocol you need. The manual shows the circuitry for 4-20mA, 120VAC, DC logic voltage, and DC logic current inputs.  The basic layout is shown and the resistor values can be calculated fairly easily. For simple operation, a 690 ohm resistor in series with a 24VDC supply will suffice to switch the unit on and off in 4-20mA mode. In other terms, a voltage of about 5.8 to 6 VDC at the terminals will turn them fully on, and a voltage of 5 volts or less will turn them fully off. Between 5 and 5.8 volts, the unit will flash on-and-off at a rate that increases until the full-on voltage of 5.8 volts is reached. There is a heat sink, measuring 9x3.5x3 inches with a card slot along the top edge, that can be re-purposed for other projects if you do not need a power controller. The case rises another 1-5/8 inch above the heat sink for a total height (actually depth, since it is meant to be mounted vertically on a back plane) of 4-5/8 inches.
