It operates on 9 volt battery . We put a 9 volt battery inside the unit and it does not appear to do anything. You might need to have a light source or something else hooked up to the unit. On the right side of the unit, it has a little key that slides in and out of the unit. Check out the pictures. It comes with a carrying case and different adapters pictured.
