This beautiful hard wood letterpress block "Fair" was used by my grandfather from the 1930's into the 1960's to print posters for State Fairs all around the country. This cut is from my collection of letterpress wood block type and is an excellent example of how this wood type develops a patina with age. The hard wood was used so that the block could be perfect through many years of impact printing, using raised reversed letters which would be locked in a 'chase' and then pressed against a sheet of paper to form the printed impression.  The letters still clearly show the red color ink that was used for this poster and the wood grain shows through, though the type remains totally smooth to the touch.   The block is 3 3/8" high and 11" wide.  All printing blocks are the standard (approximately 7/8-inch) height as all the letters and woodcuts placed in the chase had to be exactly the same height in order to make a crisp impression on the paper.   This is a beautiful example of an age gone by, when these block were lovingly crafted and used for many years.
