Field Notes is a company which had, as its founding inspiration, the vanishing subgenre of agricultural memo books, ornate pocket ledgers and the simple, unassuming beauty of a well-crafted grocery list. Cofounded by the Draplin Design Company of Portland, Oregon with Coudal Partners of Chicago, Illinois they bring to us “Field Notes” in hopes of offering, “An honest memo book, worth fillin’ up with good information”. Since Winter 2008, Field Notes has issued quarterly Field Notes Colors, limited-edition variations on their classic memo books. The Colors series explores new papers, printing processes, and colors, sometimes adding special packaging and other fringe benefits. Field Notes also does some co-promotions with businesses, organizations and professionals. These “branded” notebooks are a collector’s grail. They can sometimes be obtained through direct sales but are, more often than not, only available at conferences, workshops, or as a promotional item. Field Notes Colors Packs are sold in limited quantities and they sometimes sell out shortly after they’re announced, making them highly sought after and collectible!
