Avoid thin or burned-up irons to prevent deep cuts into the hide and thin scars that will be covered with hair. The overall length of the set is 36". Properly applied and legally recorded, a brand can serve as proof of ownership and increase the chances of recovering stray, missing, or stolen livestock. It also serves as a deterrent to theft. To use the branding iron set, heat the iron using coals or bottled gas until it is gray in color - too black and it won't burn deep enough, too bright cherry red and it will burn too deep. The properly applied brand should be the color of saddle leather. This stainless steel fire branding iron set with 4" numbers (0-8) is a complete set from Stone Manufacturing. Apply the iron firmly and rock it slightly for a uniform brand. Choose a simple brand design without sharp corners or edges to avoid burning out and blotching. The open backed design allows for clear and legible brands, and the stainless steel numbers are precisely formed to be 3/16" thick and 1" deep. Clean and reshape the irons after use and store in a container of oil. Do not brand damp animals, restrain them securely to prevent blotched brands, and never brand over an existing brand.
