Positive pressure SCBA's act by supplying air to the firefighter when he/she inhales and by supplying a small constant flow of air to the face piece. This constant air flow creates an air pressure in the face piece greater than that of the surrounding atmosphere thereby keeping contaminated air out of the mask.
