It serves to prevent overheating in the unit when it is not operated in the "Fan Only" mode for three minutes to cool the unit. The fan will run when the unit is in the heat position or exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The upgrade automatically turns the fan on whenever the interior temperature of the unit exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to wait until the cooling fan shuts off before unplugging the unit.
