This counter is not an ebay long-shot, and is ready to use for regulatory compliance surveys and measurements. The circuitry has been examined using the quality control references which are provided by Bicron (now Thermo-Fisher), and passes the stringent battery of tests in a lab where the calibration instruments themselves are calibrated. This is actually certified for use in Univerity Of California Scool radiochemistry and oncology labs! This is not a standard eBay "oh crap oh crap I hope it works" kind of thing. There is a site where fellow nuke workers socialize and sell used instrumentation products... That is where I would make a lot more of this one. So many people say looks don't matter; But we all know that just crap. This meter is gorgeous. It would be an exaggeration to say "there are a few dings and scratches"..... All I can find is a mark, a scuff or two; frankly and honestly, it looks new. That's a good start. When you can find one with good chrome, you know for sure that it was taken care of. More info about the meter: I did my extensive pre-sell battery of tests. The tests are specified in the technical manual and schematics. I have and use all equipment recommended by Bicron to perform and analyze their OFF THE LINE specifications. This meter, without doing so much as turning a potentiometer, passed each and every one of those tests. And that's a lot of testing. This thing is solid. The test equipment includes a variable output regulated power supply (which is set at 9.3 volts during the tests per technical manual calibration procedure, so there are no variances in current as there could be with batteries), multimeter, high impedance probes, and sources of known activity/meticulously calculated decay. All sources used to calibrate this meter are NIST traceable. It looks like new and functions like new, as it comes from a lab environment, was part of a seldom used emergency kit, and has been removed from that storage only for calibration and testing of the meter itself. Last calibration and testing was done in August of 2014. It is currently certified for use within the University of California hospital and lab facilities, which have calibration standards that far exceed the NRC regulations for power plants and nuclear materials facilities. The meter has an internal energy compensated GM probe; used on the 1000x setting, to provide real time dosimetric analysis in mild to moderate hot zones. A little known fact is the beta check window. That's the cut out rectangle in front of the internal tube. This is of great importance in emergency work, as the beta emissions from Strontium 90 can't make it through that tough alloy case. It has my favorite circuitry out of any high end brand... The circuitry to ensure such accuracy has been mastered by Bicron engineers.. Automatic dead time compensation adjustment and various other automatic adjustments are made in seconds. It measures dose rate up to 2,000mR/hour and CPM up to 2.4 million counts per minute, which is 80 times higher than meters like the CDV 700, while it just as easily reads even background radiation on it's lowest setting (0-240 counts per minute) It has five different selectable ranges, from 0.1x-1,000x, which is really nice! I am selling it this "cheap" considering the known history, current calibration, and near cosmetic perception. As it is because an external probe for this unit should be chosen carefully for health physics use. Of course, you have to get a pancake probably at some point, I'm talking about the SWGM, EWGM, and HP-270 probes. If you ask me, I will quote you on a full package with a probe included, some extra stuff, some test sources, etc. I'm not too hard to work with, but so long as we respect each other, it is all good! Even with the internal probe, this meter has such a high count/dose range that it can be used in place of an ion chamber for low-moderate fields of gamma radiation, as geiger counters are much more accurate on lower scales where ion chambers are much more accurate on high dose rates. This would be the ultimate hobbyist counter, but it is designed and ready for industrial health physics use. The internal probe used on the x1000 setting has a lower detection energy range, which is optimized for 40keV-1.2MeV. There is a beta window on the internal probe even though Bicron doesn't mention it as a feature. It has to be popped out of its case to detect beta using the internal probe, which is probably why it isn't listed as a feature. Still pretty handy, I say. Now, if you're looking for a meter to convert in to an Analyst 2000, THIS is the one. Just be sure you know what you're doing! The unofficial tutorial from the K0ff page, manual and technical manual will be included on digital media Passed extensive factory-defined scope tests for new meters, and is calibrated. (Date 8/2014, due August 2015). Manual is included on digital media with the meter. I will re-calibrate and certify for the next two years if you wish me to do so. Probes: I like the HP-270, second to EWGM so you can get some alpha action too. I had a catastrophic drop of an analyst meter today! Therefore, this meter does not come with a probe clip. I'm active in the physics Ed community, dontnhesitate to ask a while down the road. But that also sort of cool in a way... If you do a very simple modification, the internal probe will work on all scales!!! Questions are welcomed. Seriously, chat it up with me, lets figure out what you want! Enjoy!
