Testing them to ensure they work can be a problem if a readily available radioactive sample isn't available. Offered today is a radioactive source that can be used to test geiger counters. This is for four (4), generic brand lantern mantles packaged inside of a small Ziploc bag.   Each package contains four (4), mantles. These mantles are brand new, new stock. These  mantles were impregnated with Thorium (Thoriated), and are a great alternative to the hard-to-find old Coleman mantles. Each package of mantles I have produces between 1700 and 3300 CPM on my two Geiger counters. Lower readings are obtained when the mantles are still in the bag. Higher readings are obtained when the 4 mantles are removed from the package and doubled over (quadruple). Your CPM reading may be slightly higher or lower depending on the sensitivity of your Geiger counter.
