It came ready to use out of the box and I have been nothing but pleased with this tool. 28,000 RPM was way too fast for most of my needs. I was glad I opted for the speed controller because it makes handliing and startup much easier. I use it for routing guitar cavities and don't need a lot of constant adjustments, complex scrolling, or variable speed so for me this tool is perfect. It routes soft to medium hard woods at half speed like a hot knife through butter! The only thing it could use is a little more depth adjustment and perhaps a little wider base since it is a compact slightly top heavy design. The adjustment collar/plastic adjustment ring setup is primitive but the locking collar holds your setting secure and that is the important thing for me. Overall I couldn't be happier that this router delivers as much as it does for its value.
