Offered: Hamilton / Thompson Wooden Open-End Type Case Stand. Use of this style case dates back to colonial times and longer. This stand is made of hardwood maple, and has no finish. Unfinished wood surface was the way they were shipped when they were manufactured by both Hamilton Co. & Thompson Cabinet Co. Ludington, Mich. Type case has case capacity of twelve (12) full size cases. The type case stand offered has no manufactures identification plate. It is my assumption given the lack of wear and aged patina that this is a relatively new manufacture most likely mid twentieth century (1950's or later) which would leave this manufactured by either Hamilton Co. of Two Rivers, Wisc. or Thompson Cabinet Co. of Ludington, Michigan. Hamilton Co. is no longer in business and Thompson Cabinet Co. as last I've heard was on a very scaled back operation. Construction of these cabinets by both companies is identical both used maple as the primary wood. Side by side were more or less identical. Cabinet offered has individual type case supports held in place with two screws one in front and one at rear. Older cabinets have them glued and or nailed in place. Type stand offered will accommodate two cases on top of stand. The last photo included with this offering shows all twelve type cases in stand as well as the two additional type cases in the work area located on top of the type stand. PLEASE NOTE: This type case stand does not include type cases. Photo included in this offering is for display purposes only. This is a great opportunity to purchase a piece of printing history. The type case stand offered has an unfinished wood surface and there has some light staining from age. The wood can easily be sanded with sandpaper to take off the stains and varnish applied to look like new and preserve the bare wood. Of course the practical side could also be heard as to leaving the natural wood to produce your own rich patina from your ownership and years of setting type at this stand. Either choice is yours. Type stand particulars for this wooden open-end type case stand Height at front 45 inches at rear 56 1/2 inches Floor space : Width 36 inches Depth 26 inches Shipping weight: approx. 51 pounds. Type case stand will be shipped broken down into seven wood pieces and eight bolts and nuts. One of the bolts has been substituted, and has a hex head instead of a round head w/standard screw driver head to tighten. You will need an adjustable wrench for the one bolt w/hex head. All bolts are the same length and diameter. Very easy assembly and easy disassembly should you ever need to. You only tool you need a standard screwdriver and socket or adj. wrench for assembly. Type Case Stand is in excellent condition (very clean). There are no splintered, cracked or damage to the structural integrity of this case stand.
