You will be getting superior ABEC-7 Bearings that are shrink fit to custom ground interference fit and balanced spindles. If the spindle has a proper shrink fit to the bearings, they do not require a retention collar. Runout is .0005" or better. We use premium parts. These bearings are rated to 13,000 RPM. All spindles have Superior Shoulder Strengthening with extra steel on the back of the collet chuck. We liked the Sherline lathe's potential; but there was a problem. We were constantly frustrated with the lack of precision from the jaw chucks and uselessly small size of their collet sets. You may have had a similar experience too. What did we do? We designed our own custom ground, balanced and hardened spindles for producing our ultra precision parts. Our headstock conversions worked so well, we decided to offer them for sale. Our ER headstock spindles have a runout of .0005" or better. Does that sound like the precision you are looking for? Get all the benefits of using a precision ER collet system with a through hole of .550" (larger bore size available). As a note, the collet chuck will stick-out about 2.16" (55mm) from the headstock. (Frequently, we get asked about the option to upgrade to angular contact bearings and the benefits. In a nutshell, they will be the most accurate, handle the most load and can run at the highest speeds. If you think you might want the angular contact bearing upgrade; it must be ordered with the headstock (it is not easy to retrofit from the standard deep grove bearing to angular bearing). Our angular contact bearings come in one of two ways; sealed and unsealed. If you opt for the unsealed version, you must be careful to lubricate the bearings regularly by removing the dust cap and oiling. The sealed versions are permanently sealed and lubricated. They do no require any maintenance. I'm a big fan of the zero maintenance option!
