HEMLOCK Unassembled Langstroth Standard Medium/Illinois Super 10 frame size. I am a 2nd. Generation Beekeeper. Tired of Replacing my White Pine Boxes every 5 Years. My Dad Said Make from Hemlock Like The older Days They will Last a Lot Longer, So I Am. Why Hemlock (1) It is Harder than Pine you Don't Damage the corners with your Hive Tool as Bad. (2) It is Stronger than White Pine. (3) It Don't Rot or Decay as Fast as White Pine. (4) It has a higher R Rating (Insulation) Than White Pine. The Hemlock comes From a Local Saw Mill Here in The Blue Ridge Mtns. of Va. It is Air Dryed For 1 Year Before I Make the boxes. In the past I have purchased my wooden wares from the large bee suppliers, Then due to the quality of the mass produced boxes I started buying from smaller, local producers. Lately I started to make my own boxes and hives for even tighter quality control. I started to make the boxes shown here. I felt that going to a Rabbit joint would be a benefit since it is, among other things, self-squaring (to a point) The benefit the Rabbit Joint has over the finger joint is that there is less end grain exposed. The end grain of the wood is what sucks water up like a straw. The less exposed end grain the better. Glue the Joints and use # 6 X 1 1/2 Decking Screws (Sugested but not Required) for Assembly Paint or Stain And you will Have the Strongest and Longer Lasting Boxes you can Get For the Money. In my opinion these boxes are far superior to the older style. Dad Was Right. Super are Unassembled Screws are not Inclued
