While there is some coverage on general blacksmithing techniques, and some on wagons and horse related transport, harness, and such, this book is really mostly a wonderful and well considered education on how to make horseshoes and to understand what exactly is needed to best support the needs of horses and keep them healthy and working productively. There is extensive discussion of the static and dynamic loads on horses and how that translates to what is necessary to shoe them correctly for various conditions or problems they might evolve or have, and how to help cure or remedy many issues and return them to good form and health in their hooves and legs and overall. We need to remember that in many rural areas the blacksmith was “one stop shopping” and the expert on anything mechanical, including bio-mechanics of horse locomotion and how to make horseshoes, wagon wheels, or just about anything mechanical. It often fell to the blacksmith to be veterinarian, farrier, blacksmith, mechanic, and more. Much like the country doc was expected to be a midwife, obstetrician, pediatrician, emergency medicine surgeon, and psychiatrist all in one, so it fell to the blacksmith to be a “broad expert” and since horses were the key to the life, they were key to the world of the blacksmith and his clients as well. This is indeed the most rational and analytical treatment of the science of farrier work and blacksmithing for horses we have every found. Whether you are into horses, veterinary science, horse racing or other horse sports, a love of history, or want to be the most well read and skilled smithy in your county … this is the book for you … There are indeed “profuse illustrations” as is declared on the title page, and the quality, as well as quantity, of them makes clear the points discussed very well indeed! Great work … a pleasure to read. Frankly, some of us learn more from good illustrations than from tons of words … so such books are greatly valued in delivering practical and useful knowledge and insight. This one does well… There is discussion of relatively modern methods so this is also useful to machinists, engineers, and others who want to undertake manufacturing or repair of wagons and wheels and other such technology with engineering methods, or manufacturing of the same … While this book as intended as a 12 lesson textbook for colleges, it is a wonderful way to learn these skills and science on your own as well. <<>>  Comments from: ‘Blacky’ Moore I worked for 30 years as a smithy from 1945 to 1975 and wish I had had this book back when I started. Sadly I discovered it only after I retired! I learned more in a weeks read of this tome than I absorbed in 30 years of blacksmithing. I may have a few more trade tricks but this tome covers almost all I learned in 30 years of smithing and shoeing and more. Comments from: Becki Rieman II Thanks to a give of this from my grandparents, I was able to recognize the beginnings of a hoof problem and get a solution before my stallion even knew he had a problem. A little dry there and there, but the great illustrations make things clear and was worth its weight in gold, or oats or whatever … to not have my baby limping!   User friendly PDF file format, the CD is Microsoft Windows  as well as MAC compatible.   In CD ROM format, you can easily enlarge the contents of the pages on your computer screen to see more details and with better clarity. you can also print out select pages of text and pictures as needed for your particular project you are working on.   We also have other agricultural and blacksmithing related CD titles in our ebay store   NOTICE TO EBAY ABOUT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS ALL our products and publications are fully compliant with Ebay intellectual property policies.
