The 3325B has been fully refurbished and enhanced with an extremely accurate Rubidium master oscillator and improved (and much quieter) cooling. Refurbishing also includes replacement of all aluminum electrolytic capacitors (20), installation of a shielded power supply for the Rubidium standard and fans (upper, left in photo), and the addition of an extra cooling fan that directs air over the power-supply regulators. After assembly, the instrument is burned in for 48 hours and fully calibrated. Finally, a Performance/Validation test is performed (results are provided to the customer) to ensure full functionality. The Rubidium Oscillator is custom mounted inside the 3325B (upper, right in photo) and is powered by its own, independent power supply (see previous photo). This oscillator was carefully selected to provide long life (by finding oscillators with optimum Lamp and Crystal voltages). The Rubidium oscillator was calibrated against our Cesium lab standards in a 48-hour process of calibration and stabilization checks to ensure the highest accuracy. Note: The optional HP oven oscillator was originally located in this position. Electronics located on the front of the Rubidium oscillator monitor the Rubidium standard; operate the front-panel "lock" and "unlock" indicators, handle various modes of instrument operation; control the fan and fan speeds, and distribute reference signals and power. The 3325B also includes a fully-refurbished output attenuator. This board was custom remanufactured in our lab and uses new, gold-contact, high-frequency relays to ensure precise, reliable operation for years to come. Faulty attenuators are frequently the cause of the 3325 to fail or provide out-of-spec output. As a convenience, we have included a locking interconnect in the wiring harness routed from the front panel to the Rubidium standard. This ensures easy instrument disassembly and servicing. A guarded power switch for the Rubidium Oscillator has been positioned on the front panel, next to the main power switch (upper photo). This allows fully independent control of the Rubidium standard, whether the main instrument is powered on or off.Two new LED indicators on the front panel (lower photo) provide "at-a-glance" status of the Rubidium Oscillator. Green indicates full atomic lock; Red indicates the Oscillator has lost lock (also illuminates for about 3 to 5 minutes during warmup). When the Rubidium standard is switched off, both indicators remain off. With the Rubidium-Power "On," the Rubidium oscillator is powered whenever the 3325B is plugged into AC power. This maintains a 10-MHz reference signal at the rear panel even when the 3325 is powered down (but still plugged in). It also permits the shortest warm up time (almost instantaneous). With Rubidium-Power switched "Off," the Rubidium oscillator is powered down (both Red and Greeen indicators on front panel are off). In this mode, the HP 3325B automatically reverts to its own internal crystal oscillator as a time base. Use this mode when the increased accuracy of the Rubidium standard is not required. At any time, you may turn Rubidium-Power back on, and within about 5 minutes, the front-panel indicators will switch from Red (unlock) to Green (lock), indicating the instrument is locked to the atomic standard for optimum accuracy. You decide the level of accuracy you need with just a press of a button.Note: Atomic Lock is typically achieved within 3 to 5 minutes after tuning on the oscillator from a "cold" (room temperature) state. Similar to the original HP design, the frequency standard output (in this case the Rubidium Standard) is first sent to the rear panel where an external U-cable redirects the signal back into the function generator. You can use this output point to standardize other instruments even while the main unit is turned off (providing the front-panel Rubidium-Power switch, and one of its two indicator lights, is "on"). The signals from the 3325B are very clean and almost infinitely adjustable in frequency and level.
