Here is an absolute gem of an IBM Selectric! This one is a rare find. Back in '79 when I worked for IBM as a technician, I would have occasion to see these and work on them. Back then, these were considered relics. Difficult to repair compared to the streamlined units of my era, I was always impressed with their solid feel and touch compared to the excellent but unified assembly of the Selectric II's of 1979. They were almost twice as heavy as the majority of Selectrics due to what seems is twice the complexity and number of parts used! Amazingly and I mean amazingly, this one made it all the way here without one single part being replaced. If you care about things like this, this is your Selectric. Call it the Rolex Oyster Perpetual series. Metal and chromed levers, brushed stainless trim, stainless main shafts, white-as-snow-zero-cracks main hub! Two-tone, perfect knobs with no scratches. Even the bell ringer has cams and rollers made of fine stainless! The pictures are an attempt to show the stainless, gunsmith grade metals inside. IBM did not have CNC machines and this one has the look and resultant feel that only comes from such hand machined precision. The Smithsonian would certify this one as period correct: 1962 and no replacements or aftermarket parts. 100% certifiable. The reality is, nobody will insist on these things and really just want a sweet Hunter S. Style to type their books on. I get that and have sold many, many red Selectrics to this clientele. This one is for the collector who knows them and will appreciate the unique rarity of this one. If anyone should know a winner like this, it is I. I have priced this high because I intend to keep it as my own. (Everyone has a price) Something I haven't done before. I used to hate these as a tech because they were very hard to access and work on. Now, I appreciate them for that very fact. If, someone buys this from me, at this astronomical price, there will be no warranty issue for life, in other words: lifetime warranty. I have set aside donors from this era to address any parts issues later on. No worries. I have completely overhauled this machine per my "seller's other items". This is not simply a warmed over oiled and tested and cleaned, this is completely chemically cleaned, re lubricated and I have basically remanufactured every aspect of this machine and it is as new. Inside, where only techs can see, is the real value of my work. This is a museum grade restoration. This required no adjustments or parts, a chemical cleaning and oil and grease was it. The plastic key buttons show zero wear as does the spacebar and margin levers. It must havve been in a dark closet and covered as the plastic has zero as in zero yelloqwing or cracking, an absolute wonder to me, actually. Thousands of machines have now crossed my bench and never are the plastic parts unblemished. Even new parts jn the box have some degree of mild yellowish tint, not this one! Odd but true. A keeper for sure. These machines are an absolute joy to use. The keystroke speed and touch from the heavier flywheel inside are only from this series. FedEx and professional crating for no worries. Lifetime warranty on everything. (Yes, my descendants are IBM trained)
