Overview The IMU8420 is a high performance mobile standalone 10 DOF data logger ready to use with an optional AA battery holder or lithium polymer battery, uSD socket and wireless connector.  The pre-programmed data logging software is capable of delayed start, threshold start, on power up start and automatic file naming with MEMs sensor data logged to an uSD card.  The uSD connector accepts microSD adapters up to 32G.  A 240mah lithium polymer battery can power the unit for up to 8 hours of continuous data logging use.  The unit also includes a lithium polymer integrated charging circuit and accepts lithium polymer batteries of different capacities.  All logged data is time stamped to the msec in real time by the onboard crystal controlled real time clock.  Recorded MEMs sensor data is stored as time stamped text files for easy inspection and display.   The IMU8420 uses a powerful AT32UC3C2512 AVR32 32bit processor running at 64MHz with on chip hardware floating point unit.  The FPU allows the IMU8420 to execute an Extended Kalman Filter in real time providing a sophisticated sensor fusion capability.  The EKF outputs corrected roll, pitch and yaw in real time.  Complete source code to the EKF is provided with the data logging application.  The datalogging application with integrated EKF is available as beta code at this time.    The IMU8420 is a 10 Degree of Freedom Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor platform in a small form factor with onboard processor (AVR32) and USB interface.  The all digital design has a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis rate gyro, 3-axis magnetometer and barometric pressure sensor.  The accelerometer is the Analog Devices ADXL345 with +-16G range and 4mG sensitivity.  The rate gryo is the STMicroelectronics L3GD20D with 250/500/2000 degree/second output and a 8.7-70mdps resolution.  The magnetometer is the Honeywell HMC5883L with eight selectable ranges from 0.88 to 8.1Gauss and a sensitivity of 5mGauss.  The barometric pressure sensor is the BMP180 Bosch sensor with 10m accuracy and 1.5ft resolution.  An optional MS5611 barometer is also available with a 10cm height resolution and fast update rate.  The IMU8420 uses the latest MEMs sensors.  A sophisticated data logging application is included.  The IMU6420 is a complete standalone system.   The IMU8420 can be powered from the USB interface, optional lithium polymer battery (on board charger), high voltage regulator (12-24V) or optional AA battery supply with the flip of a switch.  A voltage regulator drops the USB 5V supply to the 3.3V supply used by the processor and MEMs sensors.  The lithium polymer battery charging subsystem allows the unit to be powered and automatically charged while connected to the USB interface providing seamless power management.  The lithium polymer charging circuit supports battery capacities from 100mah to 1300mha.    The accelerometer and rate gyro have a high speed SPI interface while the magnetometer and pressure sensor have a I2C interface.   The IMU8420 requires 3.0-3.3VDC at approximately 25ma.  The IMU6420 is an excellent device for mobile aircraft, robotic applications and general data acquisition applications and with the onboard 128K flash processor has expansion space for dedicated applications.  A sophisticated data logging application that runs on the onboard processor is pre-loaded.   The AVR32 includes a DFU bootloader activated by holding an interface pin low during power up.  Atmel provides a desktop utility (BatchISP) to reflash the processor.  The Data Logging application was written using Atmel's AVR Studio V6 and complete source code can be downloaded from our web site.    The EKF (based on the Parazzi code) outputs roll, pitch and yaw in real time with a filter cycle time of 1.8mseconds.  The EKF is being enhanced and has been integrated with a desktop hexapod demonstration application that will also be available shortly.  The IMU8420 is an active ongoing development project.    Download the IMU8420 Technical Reference Manual (pdf) for more information.   Download the the IMU8420 Data Logger V0.98 Project (zip) here.   The new V1.00 Data Logger software with full ZigBee wireless support is now available.  This Project File is available by request.
