Used Jikei Uni Type Ophthalmodynamometer This auction is for a used Jikei Uni. (we think that Uni. is short for University as there is a Jikei University Department of Ophthalmology in Japan but we are not sure about this) / Bailliart Type (the instrument definitely indicates, although presumably in French or some other language, that it is a Bailliart Type Ophthalmodynamometer; perhaps it is really just a Bailliart Type Ophthalmodynamometer and it is just that the case says Jikei Uni and it is not the original case; however, our guess is that it is the correct case and it is just that Jikei University just put their name on the case and it is just a Bailliart type in that case; or maybe it is a Bailliart type but it was modified in some way by Jikei University; the bottom line is that we do not know) Ophthalmodynamometer. The dial at the top has two “hands”, one that spins as the plunger at the bottom is pushed in; the other acts as a “marker” that stays in place after the plunger is let back out. It comes with the protective case as shown which does have some scuffed and worn looking areas. The ophthalmodynamometer itself looks to be in good shape. There is no instruction manual so the following is based on research we found about ophthalmodynamometry in general. You may want to do your own research before bidding. Ophthalmodynamometry has been reported to be correlated with central retinal artery pressure (RAP) as a screening test for reduction in carotid blood flow. After topical anesthetic is administered, the ophthalmodynamometer is used to apply pressure in calibrated amounts to the globe. Simultaneous ophthalmoscopy identifies pressure needed to cause onset of arterial pulsation and complete collapse of the central retinal artery. Comparison can be made to systemic blood pressure and to measured pressures in the opposite eye. A 70% to 90% stenosis of the carotid artery (that is, high grade carotid stenosis) may cause a decrease in retinal artery pressure (RAP).
