John Deere "E" Stover CT & other closed crank Hit & Miss Engine Crank Case Breather Custom Made in the U.S.A. to help stop oil leaks I recently Invested in More Tooling ($) that will hopefully allow me to get back at making more of these in larger quantities again. See the video of one in action  https://youtu.be/w1kmCD-6QoU And this video posted by a Happy Customer of one on his CT Stover. Couldn't Ask For a Better Endorsement (2nd Pic.) https://youtu.be/9S6_cqGRreA I made up the first one of these over the Memorial Day weekend 2015 to help out a lady selling ice-cream with one of those John Deere powered Ice-Cream makers that was puking oil out all over the place from the governor side cover and the magneto and crankcase cover gasket. She was set up at the Stephenson County Antique Engine Club's Silver Creek Museum during the Memorial Day Steam Train rides on the Silver Creek & Stephenson Railroad and when I saw how bad her engine was leaking oil on Sunday I decided Monday morning to whip up a breather for her. This is what I came up with and it is My Own Design, Engineered and made by Me, including any & all changes & modifications after making the one in the video. Hers was the early style JD "E" before they added the factory breathers and the previous owner had already drilled the crank case cover and added a long 'stand pipe' made of 1/2 inch water pipe but then instead of being open it was capped off with a pipe plug.  With just the pipe it didn't seem to matter if it was open or plugged, the engine still leaked oil. So, I designed & made the breather to simply screw in place of the pipe plug. As Noted, The engine in the 1st Video already had the long 'stand pipe' sticking up above the engine, but I don't think that would be needed considering the later JD E engines  with the factory breather built in were on a raised boss that only stuck up about a 1/4 inch above the crankcase cover. The 2 I know of so far on Stover Engines were mounted directly to the crankcase cover and both owners say they are working good there. I was told that 1 so far has gone on a Fairbanks Morse Eclipse that I may be getting pictures and/or video of in the near future. As I suggested to the winning bidder of the first one I sold on here, I would start out by mounting this directly into a hole drilled & tapped for the 1/2 inch pipe thread. IF it tends to have any oil mist spraying out the poppet valve then maybe try adding a 2 to 4 inch extension pipe to raise it up higher if needed. However, If it sprays oil out the breather that may mean you need new rings as that would indicate excessive blow-by. The Breather needs to mounted relatively straight up & down to function properly, preferably located so the crankshaft doesn't sling oil directly into the opening. I was able to get some pictures sent to me of one of these mounted on a CT2 Stover as shown in the 2nd & 3rd pictures. With the diamond shaped raised boss he mounted it on it almost looks like it belongs there, and he is Very Happy with how it is working for him. (which makes Me Happy as well) It works by simply popping up to relieve the crankcase pressure on the power stroke & then dropping back down to create a vacuum to suck any oil back in that might have seeped past the gaskets and seals thereby eliminating the pesky leaks around the mag, crank cover, governor cover plate, and push-rod. It might also help low compression engines to run a little better as they are no longer fighting the crankcase pressure on the power stroke and may get a small boost in vacuum on the intake stroke if the rings are worn a little, But Again, If your rings are badly worn you may have so much blow-by that it still leaks (including maybe out through the breather). I made a couple minor changes (from the video) to the later ones as I have listed here, namely drilling it for the cross pin after inserting the pipe nipple and riveting it in place instead of fighting with it going together trying to pin the shaft in place with it partially screwed together, but it still functions the same as the one shown in the video. Please note that the oil on the side of the engine in the first video from the  00:25 to 00:29 mark is leftover seepage still running down the side from the crankcase cover gasket from before installing the breather. If you look at the (4th) picture of the engine you will see how bad it was leaking prior to adding the breather. I have talked with her a couple times since then & she is very happy with it and the leaking has stopped altogether. While I originally made this to go on the John Deere model "E" engines, they should work equally well on any brand, make, or model of engine with a closed crank that has issues with oil leakage, hit & miss or Throttle Governed. A few that come to mind include Stover (as shown in 2nd & 3rd pix and the 2nd Video), International "M", McCormick Deering "M", Novo, and others. Also as shown in the last picture, this can also be screwed into a "90° Street Elbow" for use on a side cover on other makes and models of closed crank engines whether Horizontal or Upright as long as the breather is turned so the poppet valve is sticking straight up. The 90° Street Elbow is Not Included and is only shown as another mounting option. As I get more of them made again I will list them as "Quantity Available" (of however many I have at the time) in case anyone wants or needs more than one of them. At the moment now I just have one ready to go and then I will need to go out and buy more materials before making any more of them, plus finding the time to machine and assemble them. Selling AS IS based on pictures and description.  Payment to be in U.S. Currency through PayPal unless picking up in person. Shipping will be calculated by size & weight. It will be well packaged and should arrive in the exact condition as shown in the pictures. International shipping is available as well if you're willing to pay for it (as 3 have so far, with one shipped to Canada, one to the UK, and one to Australia).   Thanks For Looking & Happy Bidding! Please also check out my other current and future listings as I get time to photograph and list more items.  Never know what I might list next from 35-40+ years of collecting and hoarding anything and everything.
